Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) predicts Americans will be “shocked” and “appalled” once the preliminary report on the assassination attempt targeting former President Donald Trump, along with the related security failures, is made public.
Blumenthal’s remarks came after a closed-door briefing with Acting U.S. Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe, who updated lawmakers on the ongoing investigation into the July 13 shooting during Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“I believe the American people will be shocked, astonished, and appalled by what we will report to them about the Secret Service’s failures in preventing this assassination attempt on the former president,” Blumenthal told Fox News after the meeting.
He also condemned the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for its lack of openness. “They should be appalled and astonished by the DHS’s failure to be as transparent and candid as they ought to be,” Blumenthal added.
While Blumenthal refrained from revealing specific details from the briefing, the public is now anticipating the release of the interim report.
In a post shared on social media by Collin Rugg, Blumenthal’s comments were highlighted: “NEW: Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal says a new report into Trump’s assassination attempt will leave Americans ‘shocked, astonished and appalled.’ The comments came after Senate members met with acting USSS Director Ronald Rowe for a closed-door briefing.”
Other lawmakers attending the briefing adopted a more measured tone. Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) pointed out that the upcoming release would be just a preliminary report. “It’ll be coming out shortly,” Peters said. “But it’s only an interim report, as there’s much more information we still need to uncover.”
Peters stressed the importance of receiving further details in the full report, which will offer a comprehensive understanding of what occurred, along with recommendations for future protective measures to prevent such incidents. “Once this report is out, we hope to gather the additional information needed to have a complete picture of what happened and outline steps to prevent it from happening again,” Peters added.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) echoed the call for a bipartisan investigation. Expressing his frustration with the limited information provided by Secret Service officials during the meeting, Johnson said, “He [Rowe] is making the commitment to provide more information. We’re hoping to release this preliminary report before the end of this session. It’s important people understand that we are committed to producing a bipartisan result.”
The Secret Service has faced mounting criticism for its security and communication breakdowns that occurred before and during the attempted assassination of Trump.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) further fueled concerns by claiming that the Department of Homeland Security is pressuring the Secret Service not to comply with Congress’s document requests regarding the assassination attempt. Hawley posted on social media: “Now I’m told the Department of Homeland Security is pressuring the Secret Service not to comply with document requests by Congress about the Trump assassination attempt. What are they hiding from the American people?”
The investigation has also raised broader questions about the agency’s protocols and security measures for other high-profile political figures, including President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Ohio Sen. JD Vance.
As the internal investigation continues, one significant development involves the retirement of Michael Plati, the Assistant Director of the Secret Service’s Office of Protective Operations. Plati, responsible for overseeing the protection of Trump and other political leaders, is stepping down after 27 years with the agency.
While the Secret Service has stated that Plati was not forced to retire, sources involved in the investigation told Fox News that he had been encouraged to step down early.
The forthcoming report is expected to shed light on the events leading up to the assassination attempt and the security lapses that allowed it to happen.

It is my theory that the attempted assassination was completed governed by the Democratic Party. This theory was developed when I seen multiple news reports that the FBI, SECRET SERVICES, and other police outfits just allowed the young man that was the assassin, was most likely hired by the Democratic Party, to do all he wanted to do before he started firing his gun at President Trump. Then that young man was instantly killed; because, those that killed him knew just a few shots was most likely dangerous. Those officers that killed that young man would not have known if the shooter had actually killed President Donald Trump.
When I was a young man I believed in the Democratic Party especially when John F. Kennedy was President; however, when Lyndon B. Johnson became President he convince me that the Democratic Party’s members were mostly mentally ill like he was.
I still believe that the assassination attempt ended as it was supposed end except Donald Trump lived. If he’d died the story would’ve ended when the assassin died.
The Secret Service was complicit in the assassination attempt.
