MSNBC has long been known for its staunchly anti-Trump stance and liberal-leaning programming. However, the recent reelection of Donald Trump has left the network struggling to retain its audience. With viewers tuning out in droves and ratings plunging, network president Rashida Jones is stepping down just days before Trump’s second inauguration.
Jones, who led MSNBC for four years, announced her resignation in a memo to staff on Tuesday. The timing of her departure has raised eyebrows, coinciding with mounting challenges for the cable news outlet as it grapples with declining viewership and a credibility crisis.
“After four incredible years at the helm of MSNBC and 11 years at NBCU, I have made the decision to pursue new opportunities,” Jones wrote in her farewell message.
Rebecca Kutler, senior vice president of content strategy, will take over as interim president, according to an official company statement.
MSNBC’s sharp ratings decline has been attributed to its reliance on polarizing personalities and its increasingly partisan content. High-profile hosts like Joy Reid, Rachel Maddow, Nicolle Wallace, Joe Scarborough, and Mika Brzezinski have faced criticism for their fiery rhetoric, divisive commentary, and skewed coverage of political events.
For years, MSNBC thrived by presenting itself as the primary opposition to Trump, dedicating hours of programming to criticism of his policies, character, and administration. However, Trump’s reelection has upended that strategy, leaving the network scrambling to retain its relevance.
One example of MSNBC’s desperation is the decision to increase Rachel Maddow’s workload. Maddow, who reportedly earns over $25 million annually, had scaled back her hosting duties to just one night a week. Now, the network is requiring her to host five nights a week to cover Trump’s first 100 days in office.
Meanwhile, Alex Wagner, who hosted the 9 p.m. ET slot on Maddow’s off days, has been reassigned to a new program titled “Trumpland: The First 100 Days,” a traveling roadshow aimed at analyzing Trump’s policies on the ground.
Adding to the upheaval, MSNBC’s parent company, Comcast, has decided to spin off the network into a new entity called SpinCo. This move will separate MSNBC from NBC News and other properties, signaling Comcast’s intent to distance itself from the struggling outlet.
The spin-off reflects the growing financial and reputational challenges facing MSNBC. Once seen as a liberal powerhouse, the network’s credibility has taken a hit as critics accuse it of prioritizing sensationalism and partisanship over journalistic integrity.
Despite its current struggles, some analysts believe MSNBC could see a resurgence as Trump begins his second term. Historically, the network has thrived on its opposition to Republican administrations, particularly during Trump’s first presidency. With Trump poised to enact over 100 executive orders in his first days back in office, there’s speculation that MSNBC’s audience of left-leaning viewers might return to seek solace and solidarity.
However, others argue that the network’s credibility has been permanently damaged. The once-loyal audience may have grown weary of the constant outrage and hyper-partisan coverage, leaving MSNBC to face an uncertain future.
Rashida Jones’ tenure as MSNBC president was marked by both highs and lows. She oversaw several programming successes, including the expansion of The Rachel Maddow Show and the introduction of new voices to the network. However, the challenges of navigating a polarized media landscape ultimately overshadowed her accomplishments.
Critics have pointed to Jones’ inability to adapt MSNBC’s strategy following Trump’s reelection. While other networks diversified their content to appeal to broader audiences, MSNBC doubled down on its partisan approach, alienating moderate viewers and contributing to its ratings decline.
As MSNBC prepares for a leadership transition and braces for Trump’s second term, the network faces a pivotal moment in its history. Will it double down on its existing strategy, or will it attempt to rebuild trust with a broader audience?
For now, the departure of Rashida Jones and the changes to programming signal a willingness to experiment with new approaches. Whether these efforts will be enough to reverse the network’s fortunes remains to be seen.
MSNBC’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of hyper-partisan programming in an increasingly fractured media landscape. As the network charts its path forward, one question looms large: Can MSNBC regain its footing, or is it destined to fade into irrelevance?
The coming months will be crucial in determining whether MSNBC can reclaim its status as a leading cable news outlet or whether it will continue to struggle in a rapidly changing media environment.

As I already stated today: NBC, NoBodyCares what you say or do because you are finito and swirling around in the giant toilet bowl of fake news liars and cowards that sold out for money and power as you never were about ethical journalistic reporting of the truth as it is to the American People!
I spit on all of you who work for this disgusting evil organization of traitors, demented fanatics and absolute losers who are as ugly on the outside as they are on the inside; so full of demon shit its busting loose and stinking up the world!
Time to Deep SIX it all into Oblivion!
You’re all Commie Pigs!
They’ve been doing the same thing that the PRAVDA News Agency did throughout the old USSR to propagandize, indoctrinate, lie to the citizenry in order to Control the Russian people.
Here we are in the USA some 33 years after the dissolution of the U.S.S.R. on December 31, 1991 to now being more akin to what the USSR was and did to its people! With now having dissolved or ebbed away many of American’s Founding Tenets and it’s Constitution by forces and persons within who are as Communist as Khrushchev was and even the same as Putin is now!
Their vision is only Amerika.
Liberals will never learn Trump’s Victory show’s the American people want they want the Truth and fake news isn’t giving it to the American people.
Reporting the news, even with bias commentary, can be good programming. Whether winning in 2016, or in 2024, ir losing in 2020, Trump supporters number 70,000,000+. It was never good business decision to alienate such a large part of the potential audience. MSNBC executives should read Art of the Deal. By the way, “I have made the decision to pursue new opportunities,” means “I got fired.”
Hopefully more left-wing MSM will be either out of business or drastically altering their programming. For too long the liars and propagandists have had control of the media. Thanks to Elon Musk who put his fortune, reputation and skill on the line to break the back of the MSM/Government lock on truth we have the opportunity to move forward and dispose of the left dictate. Time for a new look at America!
