A simple day of yard work turned into a shocking discovery for Jay Senese of Sierra Madre, California, when he found nearly a dozen mail-in ballots in a storm drain near his home. Senese, who was clearing debris from the drain, initially thought he had come across some ordinary junk mail. But mixed in with the supermarket ads and other papers were official ballots meant for residents of nearby Arcadia.
This unsettling find, first reported by ABC 7, has reignited concerns over election security and the integrity of mail-in voting. Although incidents like this are rare, they fuel existing fears about potential mishandling or fraud in the voting process, an issue that has become highly politicized in recent years.
While describing the discovery, Senese told reporters how he first noticed something unusual while working near his property. “We’re trained here to keep stuff out of the storm drain,” Senese explained. “So I got down on my hands and knees and dug around a little bit. I started pulling out a bunch of junk mail—Ralphs ads, Aldi flyers—and then I saw the ballots mixed in.”
The incident quickly caught his attention, especially given the heightened scrutiny surrounding the mail-in voting process. “Of course, they caught my attention because we’ve been seeing on TV about all the care being taken to prevent fraud and misuse of ballots. It seemed like a strange place for ballots to be,” Senese added.
Election security has become a hot-button issue, particularly in states like California where mail-in voting has become more widespread in recent election cycles. Advocates of the process argue that it provides greater accessibility to voters and promotes higher turnout, especially during the pandemic. However, critics, primarily from conservative circles, have long expressed concerns that mail-in ballots could be susceptible to tampering, fraud, or misdelivery.
Senese’s find appears to add weight to these concerns, with some questioning how the ballots ended up in such an unusual and inappropriate location. According to Senese, it’s possible that someone rifled through local mailboxes, discarded what they didn’t want, and threw the ballots away along with other mail. “I’m one of these people who’s gotten almost everything paperless now,” he explained. “I don’t get a lot of personal mail, but seeing those ballots just tossed aside with the junk mail made me wonder what was going on.”
The incident highlights the complexities of mail-in voting, especially when it comes to ensuring ballots reach their intended recipients. In California, voters can request mail-in ballots through official channels, and many receive them automatically if they are registered voters. But once those ballots are sent out, ensuring they are properly delivered and handled becomes a shared responsibility between postal services, election officials, and individual voters.
In response to Senese’s discovery, the Los Angeles County Registrar’s office issued a statement reminding residents that replacement ballots are available if they suspect theirs has been lost or stolen. However, voters can only request a replacement once, and it’s crucial that the original ballot is not used once a replacement has been issued. The Registrar’s office emphasized that anyone encountering a situation like Senese’s should report it to local authorities or election officials immediately.
Though this incident involved a relatively small number of ballots, it has added fuel to a broader national conversation about the security and reliability of mail-in voting. For many, especially those already skeptical of the process, these kinds of discoveries cast doubt on the ability of the system to function smoothly and fairly. For others, this represents a rare anomaly in a largely secure process that successfully delivers millions of ballots to voters across the country.
Election officials have consistently defended the mail-in voting system, noting that stringent measures are in place to prevent fraud and ensure that ballots are accurately counted. In California, for example, each mail-in ballot comes with a tracking system that allows voters to verify that their ballot was received and counted. However, as incidents like Senese’s show, there is always the potential for things to go wrong at various stages of the process.
Senese’s discovery has since been turned over to the proper authorities, but the questions it raises remain. As the 2024 election season heats up, both political parties are likely to continue debating the merits and pitfalls of mail-in voting, with incidents like this being used as fuel for both sides.
For now, local officials in Arcadia and Sierra Madre are urging residents to stay vigilant about their ballots and to report any irregularities. With mail-in voting playing a crucial role in the upcoming election, ensuring that every ballot is properly handled and counted will remain a top priority for election officials and voters alike.
The outcome of incidents like these will be closely watched as voters cast their ballots, both in person and by mail, across the country. For Senese, what began as a routine day of yard work has turned into a story that exemplifies the ongoing concerns over the integrity of mail-in voting—a topic that will undoubtedly remain in the spotlight as the nation prepares for another pivotal election.

Yup, lucifer’s DEI dimmercrap USPS employee.
Wonder how many it put into other storm drains??
Remember back during the 2020 election a mail carrier was video taped throwing conservative ballots in a dumpster? This mail carrier picked up the mail in ballots from neighborhoods he knew were voting for Trump by signs and talking to neighbors then throwing them in the trash. No one truly knows how many this trusted mail carrier threw in the trash. Also I don’t remember anyone doing anything to him.
oh , and they keep telling us … these are fair elections .. yeah right ..
Fair my ass California politicians have used ballot harvesting for decades; this country is screwed six-ways to Sunday and that snake Soros with Kenyan Homo Obama with many cohorts are working to rig this election too! Executions are in order so someone should get the GITMO Tribunal prepared!
There were many “mistakes” in the postal system in 2022 and 2020. But since they favored Democrats, it was pushed under the table, apparently. Democrats will never hold themselves accountable for anything. Not their nature. That is why they fear someone who will expose corruption in government. That would be Trump and company.
