A controversial Christmas decoration featuring a mock “severed head” of former President Donald Trump sparked outrage and debate in Fountain Hills, Arizona, this holiday season. The display, organized by the Fountain Hills Democratic Club (FHDC), included a wreath adorned with a mask resembling Trump’s head. The decoration quickly became the center of heated exchanges on social media and criticism from local residents and public officials.
The decoration was part of an annual event at the Fountain Hills Community Center, where civic groups were invited to showcase themed Christmas trees. While many groups chose lighthearted and traditional motifs, such as the Maricopa Sheriff’s Department using sheriff badges or an animal rescue group opting for pet-related ornaments, the FHDC’s choice veered into political satire.
The Trump mask, displayed briefly, bore handwritten statements such as “37 felonies,” “sexual assault,” and “Conspiracy to steal the 2020 election.” While it was removed after a few hours, the display left a lasting impression, triggering both condemnation and support.
Local resident Tania Brown criticized the display in a Facebook post, questioning its appropriateness during the holiday season. “How does this truly serve the community at Christmas? How do you feel guests from all over the world are going to feel? How does this represent the Fountain Hills Democratic Club? Is this what you want to be known for? I’m saddened by the response y’all chose,” she wrote.
Others, however, defended the display. Some commenters expressed frustration with continually “taking the high road,” suggesting the provocative decoration was a necessary counter to Republican displays featuring pro-Trump ornaments.
Sherri James, a Facebook page admin for the FHDC, dismissed criticism, stating, “It disturbs me that you are disappointed.” Another commenter supported the display, writing, “Frankly, I’m tired of taking the high road. I think it’s time to fight fire with fire.”
While the wreath was controversial on its own, additional comments from FHDC members further stoked tensions. In one now-deleted post, Dianne Price proposed an even more provocative idea for next year: decorating a tree with sex toys. Jennifer Ferrell Heim, a local Jewish Community Center director, suggested creating themed trees, such as a “Drag Queen Tree,” “LGBTQ Tree,” and “Banned Books Tree.”
Screenshots of these posts, shared on social media by Fountain Hills resident Libby Settle, accused the FHDC of pushing inappropriate themes. Settle tweeted, “Fountain Hills Democrats are up to no good again. They want to groom children and desecrate the [Fountain Hills] Community [Center] with sex toys, LGBTQ, [and] Trans Christmas trees.”
Fountain Hills Councilman Allen Skillicorn weighed in, expressing dismay over the display while defending the group’s right to free speech.
“While I defend the Fountain Hills Democratic Club’s free speech, I am shocked by the inappropriate and out-of-touch behavior by FH Dem Club members,” Skillicorn told The Arizona Sun Times. “The Grinch appears to reside in their hearts. The people of Arizona and Fountain Hills have rejected their sex toy ideology and devotion to confusing children.”
He added, “I defend their right to not believe in Christianity and the Holiday of Christ’s birth, but does that mean they should mock the faith of others? I invite the FH Dems to enjoy some eggnog and twinkly lights, but leave the Bah Humbug at home, behind closed doors.”
Skillicorn also highlighted the contrast between the FHDC display and other groups’ trees, which focused on themes like public safety, community service, and holiday cheer.
Following the backlash, the FHDC defended its actions on social media, stating that the wreath was a temporary statement meant to provoke thought. An admin in the group’s public Facebook page explained, “We have removed the offensive mask out of respect for all Democrats. A statement was made, if only for a few hours.”
The club’s members appeared divided on whether the display was an effective form of expression or a step too far. While some applauded the bold statement, others acknowledged that it risked alienating potential supporters during a sensitive time of year.
The incident underscores the growing polarization in American politics, where even holiday traditions become battlegrounds for ideological clashes. Critics of the FHDC display argue that such provocative acts deepen divisions and erode the spirit of the season, which should focus on unity and goodwill.
Supporters, however, see the display as a legitimate form of protest, especially in response to Republican-led initiatives they view as equally provocative. The Fountain Hills Republican Club, for example, decorated its tree with Trump flags celebrating him as the “45th & 47th President of the U.S.A.”
The uproar surrounding the wreath reflects the broader cultural divide in the United States. As partisan tensions remain high, public spaces and events intended for community bonding increasingly serve as platforms for political expression.
While the FHDC’s display has been removed, the debate it sparked is far from over. For many in Fountain Hills, the incident raises questions about the balance between free speech and respect for shared traditions. As Councilman Skillicorn noted, “This isn’t just about politics; it’s about the kind of community we want to build.”
In the end, the controversy serves as a reminder that even during the holidays, the political divide in America shows no signs of easing.
