Chinese scientists have announced the discovery of a new bat coronavirus, which can infect humans in much the same way as COVID-19. The lead scientist involved in this study has been linked to USAID, a U.S. government agency.
The research was carried out by teams from the Guangzhou Laboratory, the Guangzhou Academy of Sciences, Wuhan University, and the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
This new virus, named HKU5-CoV-2, was first found in the Japanese pipistrelle bat in Hong Kong. It belongs to the merbecovirus subgenus, which also includes the virus responsible for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). Researchers suggest that HKU5-CoV-2 uses the ACE2 receptor to infect hosts, the same receptor used by the virus that causes COVID-19.
The study highlights, “We report the discovery and isolation of a distinct lineage (lineage 2) of HKU5-CoV, which can utilize not only bat ACE2 but also human ACE2 and various mammalian ACE2 orthologs.”
The scientists have shown that HKU5-CoV-2 can infect human ACE2-expressing cell lines and human organoids. This finding underscores the potential zoonotic risk posed by this bat virus.
The study team warns, “Bat merbecoviruses, which are phylogenetically related to MERS-CoV, pose a high risk of spillover to humans, either through direct transmission or facilitated by intermediate hosts.”
Although the potential for human spillover of animal merbecoviruses needs further investigation, the risk is concerning. Published in the peer-reviewed journal Cell, this study adds to the growing body of knowledge about zoonotic diseases.
Leading the study is Shi Zhengli, a prominent virologist from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Known as the “bat woman” for her extensive research on bat coronaviruses, Zhengli has been exploring bat caves since 2004. Her team has discovered a variety of novel viruses in bats, including SARS-like coronaviruses.
It’s noteworthy that Shi Zhengli’s research reportedly received financial support from USAID. A 2021 Vanity Fair article disclosed that Zhengli listed over $1.2 million in U.S. government grants on her CV, including funds from the NIH and USAID. Part of this funding was reportedly channeled through EcoHealth Alliance.
EcoHealth Alliance, as per tax filings from 2018, received up to $15 million annually in grants from various federal agencies. These agencies included the Defense Department, the Department of Homeland Security, and USAID. Emails obtained via a Freedom of Information request revealed that Zhengli was allegedly involved in gain-of-function experiments.
In one email, Peter Daszak of EcoHealth Alliance cautioned collaborating scientists to distance themselves from a public statement. This statement concerned gain-of-function research, which resulted in a coronavirus capable of infecting human cells. Daszak wrote, “We’ll then put it out in a way that doesn’t link it back to our collaboration so we maximize an independent voice.”
During a House Oversight Select Subcommittee hearing in March 2023, Dr. Robert Redfield, former CDC Director, shared his views on American tax dollars funding research at the Wuhan lab. Representative Nicole Malliotakis questioned Redfield on this matter. Redfield replied that funding likely came from NIH, the State Department, USAID, and DOD.
Despite the controversy, Shi Zhengli has publicly dismissed the lab-leak theory regarding COVID-19. She maintains that the virus did not originate from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which is a high-security lab.
The Blaze reported in July 2021 that Zhengli had collaborated on coronavirus work with two military scientists, one of whom has since died under mysterious circumstances.
