A recent government report revealed an alarming 14% rise in the homeless population in Washington, D.C. compared to the previous year. In response, former President Donald Trump has stepped up with bold plans to tackle the issue. Trump’s strategy includes relocating the homeless and getting tough on crime, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
Trump’s announcement was made via a Truth Social post, where he stated, “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY.” He assured that accommodations would be provided, but emphasized they would be “FAR from the Capital.” Meanwhile, his message to criminals was clear: they belong in jail.
Further signaling his no-nonsense approach, Trump declared, “There will be no ‘MR. NICE GUY.’” Reclaiming the capital was his priority, and he thanked his audience for their attention to the matter. This statement followed his recent executive order titled “Ending Crime and Disorder on America’s Streets.”
The executive order highlighted concerning statistics, noting that 274,224 individuals were living on the streets on a single night during the last year of the previous administration. It pointed out that nearly two-thirds of these individuals had used hard drugs like methamphetamines, cocaine, or opioids. Additionally, a significant number reported suffering from mental health conditions.
Trump’s order criticized past programs for their failure to address the “root causes” of homelessness, despite costing “tens of billions of dollars.” It called on the Department of Justice to help states overcome legal barriers to the civil commitment of those posing risks to themselves or the public. These measures aim to assist those who “cannot care for themselves.”
In a related move to restore order, Trump has taken decisive action in Washington, D.C. Fox News reported that the president has assumed control of the city’s Metropolitan Police Department. To further bolster safety, he has deployed approximately 800 National Guard troops.
During a press conference, Trump expressed confidence in the National Guard’s ability to “reestablish law, order and public safety in Washington, D.C.” He emphasized that the troops would be allowed to perform their duties effectively. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth assured reporters that troops would be “flowing into the streets of Washington in the coming week.”
Hegseth emphasized the readiness and determination of the National Guard soldiers. “They will be strong, they will be tough, and they will stand with their law enforcement partners,” he stated. This commitment to upholding law and order reflects the administration’s firm stance on addressing the issues facing the capital.
The approach taken by Trump aligns with a broader conservative ideology focused on law enforcement and public safety. Drawing on the principles of leaders like Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater, the strategy underscores a return to order and stability. It seeks to address the pressing issues of homelessness and crime without resorting to failed past methods.
The decision to involve the Department of Justice aims to remove obstacles hindering effective solutions. By tackling the legal challenges surrounding civil commitment, the administration hopes to offer meaningful help to those in need. This approach reflects a shift towards pragmatic and results-oriented policies.
Fox News has highlighted the significance of Trump’s actions as a response to the growing concerns in the nation’s capital. The measures enacted are seen as necessary to restore peace and security. The emphasis on strong leadership and decisive action is a central theme in addressing the issues at hand.
Trump’s focus on accountability and responsibility is evident in his policy proposals. By prioritizing public safety and addressing underlying issues, the administration aims to create a safer environment for all citizens. The deployment of National Guard troops is a testament to the seriousness with which these challenges are being addressed.
Overall, the response to the rising homelessness and crime in Washington, D.C. is rooted in a commitment to restoring order. By combining law enforcement efforts with support for vulnerable populations, the strategy seeks to create lasting change. The administration’s actions are aligned with conservative values of personal responsibility and community safety.
Through these measures, Trump aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of a law-and-order approach. By addressing the root causes of homelessness and supporting law enforcement, the administration hopes to foster a secure and prosperous capital city. The emphasis on practical solutions reflects a dedication to improving the lives of all citizens.

Homeless and squatters are suffering, even dying. Being “nice” and “compassionate” hasn’t worked. Enabling is not compassion. Many may not be the best qualified to determine their own futures. I’m glad that someone has the courage to try tough love. If it works, city mayors should follow the example. “Doing something” is not the same as “getting something done”.
