A postgame television interview at George K. Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh was cut short Thursday night when gunfire broke out amid a crowd leaving a high school football game, leaving three people injured.
Westinghouse Academy had just finished a 35-0 win over University Prep when the shooting occurred. Players were in the middle of an interview on Point 22 when they had to scatter as shots rang out.
Three individuals, believed to be teenagers, were struck by gunfire. They were taken to the hospital and are listed in stable condition, according to WTAE.
Pittsburgh Police Chief Jason Lando said officers were on scene working to break up fights in the crowd when the shooting started.
We had officers both inside and outside of the stadium, just there out of precaution as a safety measure. As the game ended, there was a large crowd out here on Carson Street. A couple of fights broke out. We had multiple officers from the city and Port Authority that were on the scene, helping to just facilitate people safely getting out, breaking up a couple fights, when suddenly, an individual pulled out a firearm and fired multiple rounds.
Pittsburgh Public Schools issued a statement following the incident, emphasizing the district’s commitment to student safety.
The safety and well-being of our students remains our highest priority. We are grateful to the Pittsburgh Police officers and other public safety personnel who were present and responded immediately. The District will continue to work closely with our public safety partners and will make appropriate supports available to students and staff affected by the incident.
No arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting. The incident remains under investigation by Pittsburgh police.
