“Godzilla Minus Zero,” the sequel to the acclaimed 2023 film “Godzilla Minus One,” opens in U.S. theaters on Friday, November 6, with no streaming or digital release date yet announced.
The film, written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, returns to post-World War II Japan, picking up the story in 1949 as the country struggles to rebuild. This time, a new monster, King Ghidorah, emerges to threaten Japan, raising the question of whether Godzilla will once again become the nation’s unlikely protector.
Ryunosuke Kamiki reprises his role as Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot who fled his post during the war. Returning cast members include Minami Hamabe, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Ando, and Miou Tanaka. New additions to the cast are Min Tanaka, Masami Nagasawa, and Jun Kunimura.
For now, the only way to see the movie is in a theater. “Godzilla Minus Zero” is not a Netflix original and is not currently streaming on Netflix, Max, or any other platform. The film is an independent Japanese production distributed in the U.S. by Toho’s GKIDS label.
GKIDS has an output deal with HBO Max, meaning the film could eventually land there after a digital release. Netflix is also a possibility — its predecessor, “Godzilla Minus One,” got a surprise release on Netflix about six months after its U.S. theatrical debut and has streamed there ever since. Whether the sequel follows the same path is not yet known.
Viewers hoping to buy or rent the film digitally, including on Prime Video, will also have to wait, as no digital release date has been set.
“Godzilla Minus One” was released for digital purchase and rental on June 1, 2024, roughly six months after its theatrical opening, the same day it began streaming internationally on Netflix. If the sequel follows a similar timeline, a digital and streaming release could arrive around early May 2027 — but that is speculation, not a confirmed date.
Moviegoers who don’t want to wait can find showtimes through Fandango starting this weekend.
