A scam network is using artificial intelligence to fabricate videos of wounded military veterans in order to sell cheap merchandise to sympathetic buyers, according to a BBC report. The scheme has been documented in the United Kingdom, but consumer advocates warn similar tactics are likely spreading elsewhere, including the United States.
The videos depict disabled and disfigured veterans, some shown missing an eye or a nose, claiming their injuries came from combat. The fabricated figures appeal to viewers’ sympathy while soliciting purchases of supposedly handmade patriotic items, the BBC reported.
Army veteran Raymond Gilbert told the outlet he paid $200 believing he was buying a wooden flag figure crafted by a disabled fellow serviceman. Instead, he received a package bearing Chinese writing on the envelope. Inside was nothing more than a printed image of a flag glued to a piece of plywood.
“They’re despicable,” Gilbert said. “Using our disabled Army veterans is abhorrent — preying on our heartstrings to help these people out — is a despicable thing to do.”
Gilbert served as a quality manager for the British Army in Afghanistan.
The fabricated products originate from China, and the AI-generated videos, while convincing enough to fool some buyers, are reportedly not sophisticated forgeries. That the scam continues to circulate suggests it is still finding victims.
What buyers can do
Consumer advocates recommend a few basic precautions before purchasing items advertised through emotional social media appeals:
- Verify the seller’s identity and location before sending payment.
- Be skeptical of handmade claims tied to dramatic personal stories, especially involving injury or disability.
- Check packaging and shipping origin against what was advertised.
- Consider giving directly to veterans’ organizations or volunteering, rather than buying merchandise from unverified online sellers.
Because the scammers are operating from China, there is little direct recourse for victims, and no indication that Chinese authorities are moving to shut the operation down.
