Alina Habba, who was once a leading attorney for Donald Trump, has now stepped into her new role as Counselor to the President. This position puts her right alongside some of the top advisers in Trump’s administration.
Having spent years defending Trump in court, she’s now focused on advancing his policy agenda and addressing what she sees as the failures of the previous administration.
Habba now operates just steps away from the Oval Office, maintaining close communication with Trump and acting as one of the main spokespersons for his administration. She regularly appears on Fox News to discuss the administration’s policy initiatives. Her main focus is on addressing errors she believes were made by the Biden-Harris administration.
“Right now, our primary focus is on fixing what the last administration messed up, which was much of our country – the economy, safety, security, the opioid crisis, children’s education, all of those things,” Habba mentioned. She highlighted Trump’s executive orders as evidence of their efforts. “And I think you’re seeing that with what’s happened in the executive orders that the president’s put out,” she added during a conversation on the White House North Lawn.
Trump’s choice to appoint Habba as Counselor to the President had been the subject of speculation for months. The role was previously held by Kellyanne Conway during Trump’s first term. Habba describes her new position as broad, giving her the opportunity to engage in various policy areas.
“Counselor to the president is a great job because you’re an advisor, but you’re also in a position where you can dive into pretty much anything you want to really get your feet wet in,” she explained.
Though her role is still evolving, she anticipates working with different teams across the administration. “I wouldn’t be surprised if I work with everybody at some point,” Habba stated.
“This is very much an open-door situation here,” Habba commented. The collaborative environment in the White House, according to her, has been incredibly productive and free of drama. She praised White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles for assembling a strong team.
“President Trump knew what he was doing, [and] Susie Wiles, in particular, knew what she was doing when she selected the people that were coming into the West Wing,” Habba said.
Habba’s journey into Trump’s inner circle began in 2019 when she met him at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey. She quickly became a member of his legal team as he faced numerous lawsuits and investigations.
Throughout Trump’s legal challenges, Habba emerged as a key figure, often speaking outside courthouses and defending Trump against what she described as politically motivated prosecutions. She later transitioned to a campaign role during Trump’s 2024 presidential run. Her presence was notable at major events, including a speaking role at the Republican National Convention.
Habba acknowledges that her responsibilities in the White House are still forming but expresses readiness to serve wherever needed. “What do you see as No. 1 – this is Alina Habba’s role?” she was asked. “I haven’t decided that yet,” she admitted. “I’m being used when asked. And my opinion is obviously an important one.”
One of the administration’s top priorities is restoring public trust in the Department of Justice. Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has been nominated to lead the DOJ, and her nomination was recently moved out of committee. Habba, who played a significant role in defending Trump in court, stressed the importance of reforming the Justice Department.
“Some of the changes we’re making, obviously at the DOJ and areas like that, are top of mind and important,” she said. “Because I was a part of that witch hunt, and it really, truly was a witch hunt.” As Habba settles into her new role at the White House, she remains committed to Trump’s agenda.
“I’m really proud to be part of the administration,” she said. Her legal background and close relationship with Trump position her as a key player in shaping the administration’s policies and messaging in the years ahead. Habba is determined to make a positive impact and contribute to the administration’s success.
