During Tuesday night’s presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, one of the most contentious moments came when Harris made claims about U.S. military personnel serving in combat zones.
Both military personnel and political commentators swiftly criticized her remarks as misleading.
Harris was questioned about the Biden administration’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal, widely regarded as one of the most disastrous foreign policy events in recent U.S. history.
The withdrawal, in August 2021, resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members during the chaotic evacuation from Kabul.
When asked directly, “Do you take any responsibility for the 13 lives lost during the Afghanistan evacuation?” Harris avoided a clear response. Instead, she made a broader statement that quickly sparked backlash: “As of today, there is not one member of the U.S. military on active duty in a combat zone anywhere in the world.”
Her comments, seen as evasive and inaccurate, ignited outrage from critics and military personnel, who pointed out that U.S. troops remain deployed in dangerous regions.
While Harris claimed no active-duty military personnel are in combat zones, reports indicate that U.S. service members are stationed in several conflict-prone areas, such as Iraq, Syria, and other parts of the Middle East, where they still face threats and risks.
Epic Fact Check 🤣…Still have no idea how NO ONE questioned her on this lie or any of the other lies during the "debate" pic.twitter.com/Umcb1t1Xq5

According to a 2023 NBC News report, at least 45 U.S. service members were injured in attacks in Iraq and Syria that year alone.
These incidents highlight the ongoing dangers faced by American troops, even in regions not officially labeled as combat zones.
Harris’s remarks have fueled a larger debate about the administration’s handling of military policy and the safety of American forces abroad.
Critics argue that her statement minimizes the very real risks that U.S. troops encounter, particularly in volatile regions.
Former President Trump also criticized the administration during the debate, pointing to rising violence under the current leadership and calling out what he described as “fraudulent statements.”
The Afghanistan withdrawal continues to be a sore point for the administration, as the chaotic exit and the loss of American lives remain fresh in the minds of many.
Harris’s comments have further reignited concerns over the Biden administration’s approach to foreign policy and the safety of U.S. military personnel stationed overseas.
As the election season progresses, these issues will likely remain at the forefront of public debate.

Evasive answer.
Trump gives straight answers, which seems to infuriate people, even those in the media.
