A concealed carry licensee shot and wounded an alleged armed robber Tuesday morning at a Shell gas station in Orland Park, a Chicago suburb in Cook County, Illinois, according to ABC 7.
The incident happened around 9 a.m. as the licensed gun owner was pumping gas into his vehicle. Police say a masked man approached him from behind the pump with a gun drawn, attempting a robbery. The concealed carrier reached behind his back, drew his own firearm and fired multiple times, ABC 7 reported.
WGN-TV reported that surveillance video captured the alleged robber wearing a mask during the confrontation.
The alleged robber managed to flee the scene on foot but was located by police shortly afterward and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Naseem Elmosa, whose father owns the Shell station, described the moment in comments to reporters.
“The guy had a gun on him, which happened to be really convenient for him,” Elmosa said.
Elmosa added that he hopes such situations remain rare, but said it was important that the customer was able to protect himself.
“I’m hoping nobody comes across this situation, but just in case this ever happens, they’re able to defend themselves. So it’s really nice, really important to see that guy defend himself in the way that everybody should be able to,” he said.
No further details on the condition of the alleged robber or possible charges have been reported.
