Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry says he is in no rush to sign a contract extension, telling reporters he wants to gather all available information before making a decision that could shape the franchise’s finances for years to come.
Curry is eligible to sign a two-year, $136.7 million extension that would keep him in San Francisco through the 2028-29 season. This year marks the final season of the four-year, $215.35 million maximum veteran extension he signed in August 2021, under which he is set to earn $62.5 million.
“I don’t want there to be no drama. No talking points. This team should be competitive and go win,” Curry said, according to ESPN’s Anthony Slater.
Curry indicated the delay is deliberate rather than a sign of discord between him and the organization.
“It’s going to happen at the right time, once I have all the information I need to make the decision that is right. The team’s been great having that conversation back and forth. If I don’t sign, it won’t affect me in terms of my play or carrying that weight. But I’ll make the decision when I’m ready.”
Curry has repeatedly said he intends to finish his career with the Warriors, but he also made clear that his willingness to sign hinges on the front office’s ability to build a winning roster around him.
“We’re in a very interesting situation. All the different salary cap conditions of whether I sign for a max or less or whatever it is, I want to be on a competitive team. I want to have an opportunity to have some flexibility because we haven’t had that in years past, the recent past.”
He suggested that taking less than a full maximum contract could give the Warriors’ front office room to maneuver under the salary cap.
“This team should have flexibility to make necessary moves if things happen. Those are always just the considerations. For me, information and patience is key. It’s just a very unique situation all the way around based on where we’ve been the last four years, where I’m at in my career, what our team looks like this year and the absolute desperation to win. Trying to balance all that.”
Curry’s comments leave open the possibility that he could accept a below-market deal in exchange for the Warriors having greater freedom to pursue other talent — a decision that rests entirely with him, not the team.
