A pastor from Detroit, who addressed the Republican National Convention, recently discussed the increasing support for Republicans among black voters.
Pastor Lorenzo Sewell, the leader of 180 Church, not only delivered a speech at the RNC but also welcomed former President Donald Trump to his church last month.
In an interview with WXYZ-TV, Sewell clarified that he is not endorsing any candidate in the 2024 election. However, he emphasized why the Republican Party is gaining traction among voters who have traditionally aligned with Democrats.
‘That’s what our nation needs. They need to relationship with Jesus Christ.’
“When we look at our community, we see clearly that our community’s hurting, right? It’s been up under Democratic leadership,” Sewell told WXYZ. “We’re hurting.”
Regarding black men specifically, Sewell said Trump is winning their support because he represents change — a signal that help is coming.
“Well, you can see it, right? You can see black men supporting President Donald Trump,” Sewell said. “I believe that a lot of them understand that something needs to change. I can see that. And I believe that black women will also begin to support [Trump].”
What about Vice President Kamala Harris? Sewell expressed skepticism about the notion that Harris should automatically secure the black vote solely because of her race.
“Look, you don’t have anything more powerful than America than a black woman. So, I understand that there are allegiances there,” Sewell said. “But sometimes that can be misguided. I’ve had people call me this afternoon and say, ‘Vote for Kamala Harris because she’s black.’
“That doesn’t resonate with me. Even though it would be amazing, she reminds me of an act. I look up to her. But that doesn’t mean that she’s supposed to be the president of the United States of America,” he continued. “I do believe that the Democratic Party picked her like we used to do in middle school when we picked the last person we didn’t want to pick.”
In the interview, Sewell shared how receptive Trump was and the specific request made by the former president last month. Prior to the RNC, Sewell recalled seeking permission from Trump’s team to pray at the event.
However, he was surprised when they not only granted his request but also asked him to pray and speak. Sewell expressed gratitude for the opportunity to honor Jesus in this way.
“And that’s all that matters. That’s what our nation needs. They need to relationship with Jesus Christ,” he said.
Moreover, Sewell said that when Trump visited his church last month, the former president didn’t request an endorsement. Instead, he asked for prayer.
“He didn’t ask for my endorsement. He asked for prayer,” Sewell told WXYZ. “And any politician that would have the local church pray for them, then we’re doing our job, and then they can do their job well.”

I saw a picture or her with her parents. They aren’t black. She ain’t black.
Blah, blah blah from another lefty.
I thought the person is about the insides not the color of their skin. We all bleed red. When I was a teenager, I had a neighbor who was black, it was 1959 and later. I had to ask him for help from my drunken father several times and you know I called him bigger Ed. It wasn’t derogatory because we just grew up that way. He was about 60 and I, 16-18 before I ran off to join the Navy. Nigger Ed was there for me. I never wants thought anything less if him, but more. He was always there for me We lived in the country and as a country boy he was my mentor. So let’s get over the color of the skin. Obama is black and not once did he do anything for the black people. President Trump helped with the black colleges, put people to work without asking their skin color. Stop this color manifesto and look at the nationality of our people.
