Disney has greenlit a new Star Wars trilogy centered on the Skywalker family, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. Jon Watts, who directed the three Tom Holland “Spider-Man” films, is attached to direct the first installment, with the script written by Simon Kinberg.
Kinberg has reportedly been developing the project, described as a “mystery trilogy,” since late 2024. The Hollywood Reporter notes the films are intended to continue what is known as the Skywalker Saga, the storyline centered on multiple generations of the Skywalker family that has anchored the main line of Star Wars films since 1977.
Rey Skywalker, the character played by Daisy Ridley in the 2015-2019 sequel trilogy, is expected to appear in the new films in some capacity, per the report.
The move comes after a rough stretch for the franchise. This summer’s “The Mandalorian and Grogu” underperformed, taking in $346 million globally against production and promotion costs estimated around $250 million — a disappointing result by Star Wars standards. The franchise’s next release, “Star Wars: Starfighter” starring Ryan Gosling, is scheduled for next May with a reported production budget of $245 million, meaning marketing costs could push its break-even point toward $700 million.
Watts brings a track record of box office success from his Spider-Man films. Kinberg’s screenwriting credits include “This Means War” (2012), “Fantastic Four” (2014), “X-Men: Apocalypse” (2016), “Dark Phoenix” (2019), “The 355” (2022), and “X-Men: Days of Future Past” (2014).
Disney has not publicly detailed further plot information, casting beyond Ridley’s expected involvement, or a release timeline for the new trilogy.
