A Florida woman running for U.S. Senate under the Democratic Socialists of America banner employed a paid staffer who repeatedly praised Hamas and wished death on Jewish people and “Zionists” in a string of social media posts, according to a report from Fox Digital.
Angie Nixon, the DSA-aligned candidate seeking Florida’s Senate seat, employed Sara Mahmoud as her campaign’s social media manager. Federal Election Commission filings cited by Fox Digital show Mahmoud received $8,400 in payments between June and July of this year, and she reportedly remained in the role as recently as June before departing the campaign.
Mahmoud’s social media history includes a 2018 post reading, “Glory and honor to our freedom fighters. Praying for their safety and success.” Fox Digital noted the post was published the same day Hamas fired as many as 400 rockets from Gaza into Israel.
In another now-deleted post from the same year, Mahmoud wrote, “Can Zionists die already?” She also posted, “Palestine is the land of the Arab Palestinian people, from it they originate, to it they adhere and belong, and about it they reach out and communicate. #Hamas31 #WhatsHamas.”
Her posts targeting Jewish people date back further. In 2016 she wrote, “Wow, white Jews are so entitled lmfaoooo please die.” In a separate post, she argued, “Zionism is a form of white nationalism, period. I’m really sick of seeing folks contesting this fact. Folks who try arguing either a.) conflate Zionism and Judaism or b.) employ race science to define ‘white’ and ‘whiteness.'”
Nixon’s Own Remarks on CAIR
The revelations about her former staffer surface alongside previously unearthed comments from Nixon herself, in which she suggested the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) should serve as an organizing vehicle for winning elections in Florida.
We need to start working on building the right vehicles. And the right vehicles are CAIR Florida. We can’t just build party. We have to build up our people in order to build up our country. And so, right now is a time where we need to breathe, but we do need to take some time and make space. And then come together and start having uncomfortable conversations.
It is not clear when Nixon made those remarks. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order last year designating both CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations, directing state agencies to “undertake all lawful measures to prevent unlawful activities by these organizations, including denying privileges or resources to anyone providing material support.”
A Broader Pattern
Nixon, who frequently invokes Marxist cop killer Assata Shakur in her public statements, has called President Donald Trump “basically a communist” despite her own membership in the Democratic Socialists of America. She has at times downplayed her ties to socialist organizing while campaigning on policies favored by the American left, including abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, establishing universal health care, and creating universal childcare and pre-kindergarten programs.
