Georgia is the new No. 1 team in the country after a Week 6 slate that scrambled the college football rankings across the board. The Bulldogs’ road win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa was the catalyst, lifting them to the top of the latest AP Top 25 poll.
Texas, which had held the No. 1 spot since Week 2, dropped six places following an unranked Oklahoma’s upset win at the Cotton Bowl.
The biggest swing in the poll belonged to two teams that played each other Saturday. Kentucky went from unranked to No. 15 after beating LSU in overtime, while LSU fell 12 spots to No. 22 and dropped to 4-2 on the season.
Three teams entered the Top 25 for the first time this season after being unranked the week before: Northwestern, Wake Forest and Kentucky. Oregon and Florida both fell out of the rankings entirely after Oregon lost at home to UCLA and Florida was blown out at home by South Carolina. Both had been ranked in the top 16 just a week earlier.
Despite losing to Georgia for its first defeat of the year, Alabama stayed put at No. 6, a sign that voters still regard Kirby Smart’s team as a measuring stick rather than a reason to punish the Crimson Tide further.
Notre Dame, now ranked No. 2, faces its first real test of the season in Week 7 with a road trip to No. 8 BYU.
Week 7 Matchups to Watch
- No. 4 Ohio State at No. 5 Indiana
- No. 9 Ole Miss hosts No. 13 Missouri
- No. 6 Alabama at No. 14 Tennessee
- No. 15 Kentucky at Oklahoma
- No. 16 Mississippi State at No. 22 LSU
- No. 18 Oklahoma State at No. 20 Houston
With that many ranked teams squaring off, another round of upheaval in the rankings looks likely heading into Week 7.
