During a recent appearance on the “Firing Line Show” with Margaret Hoover, former Secretary of State and two-time presidential candidate Hillary Clinton predicted an October surprise could disrupt the 2024 election.
In a conversation with Hoover, Clinton suggested that this surprise would likely target Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, hinting at a possible coordinated disinformation campaign linked to pro-Trump media outlets and foreign interference.
Margaret Hoover introduced the idea by comparing Clinton to Cassandra, the Greek mythological figure known for her accurate prophecies that were ignored.
Hoover asked Clinton to put on her “Cassandra hat” and share any predictions she had about the upcoming election.
“Putting that Cassandra hat on for the moment, but we’re listening—what is something you see happening in the near future that we should be taking more seriously?” Hoover asked.
Clinton took the opportunity to criticize former President Donald Trump and his allies, predicting that the election season would see intensified efforts to undermine Kamala Harris.
She expressed concern about the role of pro-Trump media in amplifying false narratives, drawing particular attention to what she described as an imminent disinformation campaign.
“I anticipate there will be a full-court press in October,” Clinton said. “The digital airwaves will be filled.”
Clinton elaborated on her fears, stating that Harris would be the primary target of attacks aimed at distorting her image and misrepresenting her record.
She cited outlets like The Gateway Pundit as examples of media sources that would likely spearhead the effort to discredit the Democratic candidate.
According to Clinton, this October surprise could involve false stories or misleading information, disseminated with the intent of influencing voters in the final stretch of the election.
“There will be concerted efforts to distort and pervert Kamala Harris, who she is, what she stands for, what she’s done,” Clinton said, warning of the impact that pro-Trump media could have in spreading disinformation.
While Clinton admitted she couldn’t predict the exact nature of the supposed October surprise, she expressed confidence that it would be significant.
She highlighted the danger of disinformation campaigns that originate online, often on the “dark web,” and gain traction in mainstream media.
“This is dangerous stuff!” Clinton warned. “It starts online often on the dark web. It migrates. It’s picked up by the pro-Trump media. It’s then reported on by everybody, which makes sure it has about 100% coverage and people believe it!”
Clinton’s remarks underscored her concerns about the power of media to shape public perception, particularly in the age of digital misinformation.
She called for vigilance in identifying and exposing falsehoods before they could take hold in the public consciousness.
“So I don’t know what it’s going to be, but it will be something, and we will have to work very hard to make sure that it is exposed as the lie that it is,” Clinton concluded, indirectly advocating for stronger measures to counter disinformation, including potentially limiting the influence of conservative media outlets.
Her comments have fueled debate over the role of media in elections and the broader question of how disinformation affects democratic processes.
