Senator JD Vance strongly objected to CNN correspondent Steve Contorno’s question about former President Trump’s recent comments on Kamala Harris during a press conference at the border in Cochise County, Arizona.
The inquiry arose from Trump’s statement at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention regarding Harris “becoming a Black person,” prompting Contorno to approach Vance during his visit to the U.S. southern border.
“I didn’t know she was black… until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black. Now she wants to be known as black… She was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a black person.”

Responding to the query, Vance, a father of three biracial children, deftly dismissed any concern raised by the comments, stating, “They don’t give me pause at all.”

He proceeded to explain that Trump was simply highlighting Harris’ ability to change her persona to suit different audiences, comparing her behavior to that of a chameleon.
Vance emphasized Harris’ inconsistency, drawing attention to her drastic changes in stance on issues such as crime and law enforcement.
Trump’s comments about Harris’ racial identity came in response to ABC News’ Rachel Scott questioning whether Harris was chosen for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) purposes.
Trump’s surprise at Harris identifying as Black and mentioning her Indian heritage indicated his doubt.
Furthermore, the former President’s remarks alluded to Harris adopting a Southern accent during a public appearance in Atlanta, further underscoring what he perceived as her political maneuvering.
