New York City and federal authorities are ramping up efforts to combat a troubling rise in ritualistic animal sacrifices near Jamaica Bay in Queens.
In response to recent discoveries of dead and mutilated animals, including pigs, chickens, and rats, officials are increasing patrols and implementing new measures to stop these acts, which are believed to be connected to religious ceremonies.
The National Park Service (NPS) has announced plans to install mobile lights near the Addabbo Bridge in Spring Creek Park, a federally managed area, to prevent nighttime activities involving animal torture and killing.
NPS spokeswoman Daphne Yun confirmed that additional police patrols will also be deployed to increase law enforcement presence and address the issue.
Since July, at least eight animals have been found dead or injured around Jamaica Bay.
Disturbing findings have included five maimed pigs, a dying rat stuffed into a bag with chicken bones, and a dog carcass with a broken neck.
Queens City Councilwoman Joann Ariola has been vocal about the situation, emphasizing that both the New York City Parks Department and federal authorities are committed to stopping this cruel practice.
“Animals should not be getting tortured and mutilated for any reason. This ends now,” Ariola told the New York Post. She has pledged to bring stronger enforcement to the area to crack down on the behavior.
In addition to the federal measures, the New York City Parks Department has promised increased overnight patrols in Sunset Cove Park in Broad Channel, where more animal remains have been found.
The enhanced resources aim to deter those using these areas for religious ceremonies involving animal sacrifice, often conducted under the cover of night.
Animal rescue organizations and community leaders have been calling for more action. Sloane Quealy, president of Zion’s Mission Animal Rescue, praised the increased enforcement but called for even more patrols to prevent further cruelty.
“Until then, we’re going to do 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. walks, just to see about interrupting anything that’s going on,” Quealy said.
The origins of these ritualistic killings are under investigation, but some local religious leaders suggest a sect of Hindu devotees may be responsible, while others point to groups practicing voodoo.
Both groups have been known to use nearby parks and beaches for similar ceremonies, according to reports.
Although religious freedom is constitutionally protected, Ariola made it clear that torturing and killing animals, regardless of religious context, is unacceptable.
The increased patrols and lighting are part of a broader effort to protect both the animals and the community from the impacts of these grisly acts.
The NPS’s decision to enhance patrols and install mobile lights follows an exposé by the New York Post that highlighted the surge in animal sacrifices in the area. The report underscored the need for stronger enforcement and surveillance to curb the incidents.
Ariola is working closely with federal and local officials to address the issue swiftly. “This is a collaborative effort between federal and city levels,” she said, noting that the combined resources of the NPS and NYC Parks Department will be crucial in stopping the animal torture.
Authorities are treating these incidents as serious violations of state and federal laws. Animal cruelty in New York is punishable by fines and imprisonment, and law enforcement is prepared to prosecute those responsible.
Although the reasons behind the sacrifices remain unclear, residents and officials hope the increased presence of law enforcement will put an end to these disturbing acts.
While religious practices are protected by the First Amendment, authorities have made it clear that animal cruelty will not be tolerated, no matter the reason.
As investigations continue, local leaders and animal rescue groups are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to protect both animals and the safety of the community.
