Street clashes broke out across Germany on Saturday as police came under attack in Frankfurt and Hamburg during a wave of leftist demonstrations organized under the banner “Gen Z Takes Charge.”
Public broadcaster NDR reported that a mix of groups turned out for protests held in roughly 30 German cities, including animal rights activists, communist and socialist organizations, vegans, and pro-Palestine campaigners. Organizers said they were drawing inspiration from weeks of youth-led unrest that has rattled France.
The stated grievances were broad: opposition to a possible return of military conscription, concerns over climate policy, demands for greater education funding, frustration with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and anger over the rising cost of living.
In Hamburg, police ordered the demonstration to disperse by 5 p.m. local time, but many protesters stayed in the streets and began fighting with officers. NDR reported that crowds near the central bus station threw glass bottles, fireworks, and paving stones at police, built barricades, and set them ablaze. Many of those involved in the clashes wore black clothing and masks.
A truck trailing the demonstrators reportedly broadcast messages over a loudspeaker urging the crowd to keep fighting police, denouncing “the system,” law enforcement, and the state.
“We are still patrolling the area because small groups are still out trying to throw small items into the street and set them on fire. And we are preventing that,” a Hamburg police spokesman told NDR.
Before the protests, Germany’s domestic intelligence agencies — the Hamburg State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution — had warned that far-left groups were likely to exploit the demonstrations for violence. Named groups included the Open Antifascist Meeting Hamburg, the Red Construction, the Interventionist Left, and Thawra Hamburg.
French intelligence services have separately estimated that roughly 5,000 trained far-left Antifa agitators regularly infiltrate left-wing demonstrations there, allegedly working to provoke clashes with police or attacks on government buildings while less organized participants carry out looting. A similar pattern was reported in Milan earlier this month.
In Frankfurt, multiple police officers were hurt during the demonstration. Hesse’s Interior Ministry said “one officer may have sustained more serious injuries, but this still requires further investigation.” The ministry said it estimated approximately 100 left-wing extremist perpetrators took part, launching what it called “a massive attack on the police with bottles, stones, and pyrotechnics.”
Unrest Mirrors France
The violence in Germany comes as similar far-left protests in France have escalated, with rioters there filmed throwing Molotov cocktails at police. French authorities deployed about 70,000 officers and gendarmes to secure Halloween demonstrations in Paris and other cities.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the French operation was largely successful but acknowledged that “as expected, in each procession groups of vandals and looters led by the radical far-left movement attacked the security forces.” He reported 422 arrests at the time of the statement.
