Major League Baseball has explored the possibility of staging a game inside Grand Teton National Park, according to a White House statement responding to reports that the league approached federal officials about the idea.
The White House said MLB reached out to ask about hosting a contest “similar to the Field of Dreams game” held in Iowa, but stressed that no decision has been made and no permit issued.
“This is not a Presidential directive, nor is it being directed by the White House. It’s also not being driven by the Department of Interior,” the White House statement read. “Therefore, this is not a White House or Administration priority.”
The administration also noted that the National Park Service has not granted any permit for such an event and that MLB has not finalized any venue planning. “If the MLB wants to go on site visits of national parks, that is their prerogative,” the statement said.
National Park Service Deputy Director Frank Lands reportedly traveled to Wyoming to inspect three possible sites within Grand Teton. The White House later said Lands was not scouting baseball diamonds specifically, describing the trip instead as a routine tour of several parks.
What a Teton Game Would Take
Turning federal land inside a national park into a temporary big-league venue would require substantial infrastructure — temporary grandstands, lighting, and traffic management — along with steps to keep local wildlife, including grizzly bears, bison and elk, away from the field.
Any such project would also trigger environmental reviews and public comment periods before construction could begin, a process that takes considerable time on federal land.
MLB’s special-event schedule for 2027 is already set, meaning 2028 would be the earliest a game could take place at Grand Teton if the plan moves forward at all.
Part of a Larger Trend
MLB has increasingly used one-off, high-profile venues to draw attention to the sport, including the Field of Dreams game in Iowa, the Little League Classic in Williamsport, a historic game at Rickwood Field in Alabama, and a 2025 event at Bristol Motor Speedway.
For now, any game at Grand Teton remains speculative. No permit has been issued, and both MLB and federal officials have yet to commit to a formal plan.
