A new film depicting the life of NFL Hall of Famer and broadcaster John Madden is drawing sharp criticism from football fans after the release of its first trailer, with many saying actor Nicolas Cage’s portrayal fails to capture Madden’s famously distinctive voice.
The movie, which stars Cage as Madden, is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Nov. 11. It traces Madden’s path from NFL head coach to television broadcaster to the namesake of the top-selling Madden NFL video game franchise.
Since the trailer’s release, social media reaction has centered heavily on Cage’s vocal performance, with commenters arguing it sounds more like Cage’s own natural speaking voice than an impression of Madden’s. Some fans online have gone further, calling the portrayal an embarrassment to Madden’s legacy.
Madden, who died in December 2021, was widely known for his enthusiastic, unmistakable broadcasting style, including his signature exclamation “Whoa Nellie!” He spent decades as a color commentator after a coaching career with the Oakland Raiders, and his name became synonymous with football for generations of fans through the video game series and his annual Thanksgiving Day broadcasts.
Critics of the trailer have pointed specifically to the lack of resemblance between Cage’s delivery and Madden’s recognizable cadence, questioning why more effort wasn’t made to replicate it for a film built around his identity as a broadcaster.
The film’s release date falls roughly two weeks before Thanksgiving, a holiday closely associated with Madden given his long history of broadcasting NFL Thanksgiving games.
