New York City, a city of over 8.8 million people, was heavily impacted by stringent COVID-19 lockdowns, which devastated many businesses and residents.
Dr. Jay Varma, who served as the COVID-19 advisor under former Mayor Bill de Blasio, enforced these harsh mandates while secretly engaging in behavior that starkly contradicted the policies he imposed.
In a conversation secretly recorded by a reporter, Dr. Varma admitted to hosting private sex parties with his wife during the lockdowns.
These parties, which were held in secret locations like a room below a Wall Street bank, reportedly involved groups of people using drugs such as Ecstasy.
Dr. Varma, who was responsible for overseeing the city’s strict lockdown policies, acknowledged that these gatherings were far from compliant with the very rules he had enforced.
During the undercover meeting, Dr. Varma explained that these illicit activities were a way for him and other participants to cope with the pressures of the lockdown, adding that he needed these events to “blow off steam.”
Despite requiring others to adhere strictly to his COVID-19 restrictions—like banning indoor dining and social gatherings—he felt justified in breaking these rules himself to deal with the stress of his role.
Varma expressed that he feared public backlash if his actions became known, recognizing that New Yorkers would have been angry to learn of his blatant disregard for the restrictions he imposed on the city.
While recounting his experiences, Dr. Varma said he tried to be discreet about his behavior, even renting hotel rooms for privacy.
Despite knowing that his actions violated COVID protocols, he joked about the situation, revealing that he engaged in these parties while publicly appearing on TV as a key figure in the city’s COVID-19 response.
Throughout the conversation, Dr. Varma continued to rationalize his behavior, stating that without the secret gatherings, he would not have been able to perform his job as effectively.

This blatant hypocrisy has sparked outrage among those affected by the city’s strict COVID-19 policies. As businesses struggled and families were forced to remain indoors, the man responsible for enforcing these rules admitted to deliberately violating them in the name of stress relief.
Dr. Varma’s revelations are particularly damaging given the context of the severe restrictions that New Yorkers had to follow during the pandemic.
Many residents endured financial and emotional hardship due to the city’s COVID-19 policies, and the news that a high-ranking official engaged in such behavior during this time has fueled resentment.
His actions undermine the trust that public officials rely on when enforcing measures aimed at protecting public health.
