Minneapolis police executed a search warrant on August 25 at a home shared by Adnan Hirsi, 20, the son of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and his roommate, Abdulrahman Abdi, 22, a convicted felon. Officers recovered multiple weapons and ammunition during the search.
The warrant stemmed from a routine traffic stop in which Abdi was found driving without a license or proof of insurance. He was released at the time and his car was impounded, but a firearm was later discovered. Because Abdi is a convicted felon, possessing a firearm is illegal for him, which led investigators to search the home he shares with Hirsi.
Neither Hirsi nor Omar has been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with the raid. Abdi faces a weapons charge and was released the day after his arrest. Records show he has been arrested ten times previously and has a felony speeding conviction from a 2024 arrest for driving more than 100 miles per hour.
Omar, who represents Minnesota and was the first hijab-wearing woman elected to Congress, declined to answer questions about the raid when approached by reporters in the halls of the Capitol.
“What do you know about the situation, why it happened in the first place?” she was asked. Omar did not respond and continued walking as reporters pressed further, asking, “Are you going to advise your son to move from his place? Away from that situation? We were just wondering what you thought about the whole thing.” She did not answer.
Omar’s congressional office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital, which first reported the incident. Fox News Digital also reached out to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department for comment.
The episode has drawn attention in part because of Omar’s public record on firearms policy. She has backed closing the gun show loophole, implementing “red flag” laws to temporarily bar people deemed a threat to public safety from buying guns, banning the sale of assault-style weapons, and strengthening universal background checks.
Conservative commentator Benny Johnson wrote on X that the raid was “not a good look for Ilhan Omar.”
