South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace is pushing back against online critics who took issue with her attending Saturday’s South Carolina Gamecocks football game and posting a simple “Go Cocks!” caption afterward.
The post drew a wave of criticism online, prompting Mace to respond directly to her detractors.
“I’ve had some time to reflect on my attendance at a college football game last night and then had the nerve to tweet about it,” Mace said. “So this post goes out to all the liberals, libtards, socialists, leftists, and trolls that don’t think women should attend football games or cheer for their team with their college football chant. I want you to know that I’ve unpacked your lived experiences and I’ve centered your truth and your feelings. Your feelings are valid. But despite all of that, I’m unburdened by what has been. And so I’m going to attend — I’ve decided I’m going to attend the next football game and enjoy the hell out of it.”
The Gamecocks, whose “Go Cocks!” chant has long been a fixture in Columbia, went on to lose Saturday’s game to Mississippi State, 41-34. Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor had a standout performance in the loss.
Mace has represented South Carolina in Congress and remains a frequent presence on social media, where her posts often draw sharp reactions from both supporters and critics. This latest exchange followed a familiar pattern: a routine expression of local team pride turning into a flashpoint over gender, politics and free expression online.
Mace’s response made clear she has no plans to back down from posting about her team’s games in the future.
