HBO’s dark dramedy “DTF St. Louis,” set in the Missouri city, walked away from this year’s Emmy Awards as one of the night’s biggest winners — but fans hoping for a second season shouldn’t hold their breath.
The seven-episode series, created by Steven Conrad and starring Jason Bateman, Linda Cardellini and David Harbour, earned 13 Emmy nominations. It won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Directing.
Cardellini and Harbour each took home acting awards, winning Outstanding Supporting Actress and Actor in a Limited Series or Anthology. Harbour beat out co-stars Bateman and Richard Jenkins for the honor, while Cardellini won over Joy Sunday, who played Jodie Plumb in the series.
The show, which centers on a love triangle involving characters named Clark, Floyd and Carol, was built and written as a miniseries, and that self-contained story is now finished. As of now, there are no new episodes in production or announced.
Still, creator Steven Conrad has left the door open to revisiting the show’s world in a different form. Asked in an April interview with GQ about the possibility of more “DTF” content, Conrad pointed to HBO’s own model for turning a limited series into a recurring anthology.
“Well, there’s a new instrument now: the White Lotus instrument,” Conrad said. “It’s similar themes and a different setting. A DTF anthology would be sex and violence, and if you had to pick two things as a writer to be restricted to, sex and violence are pretty good. There’s extended possibilities and infinite results, so I could do it.”
That comment suggests any future installment would likely follow the “White Lotus” approach — a new setting and new cast each season under the same title, rather than a direct continuation of the St. Louis story audiences just watched.
For now, “DTF St. Louis” is streaming in full on HBO Max, with no second season currently planned.
