The tragic and heart-wrenching incident that took place at the White Oak Park Condominiums in Columbus, Ohio has left a community in mourning.
It was in the early hours of Thursday when 29-year-old Alexa Stakely lost her life while trying to protect her 6-year-old son from a carjacker.

The devastating sequence of events unfolded at around 1:30 a.m., as Stakely went to pick up her sleeping son from a babysitter.
After bringing her son to the Honda-CRV, she returned to the residence to retrieve his belongings, inadvertently leaving the car running.
During this brief absence, an opportunistic individual attempted to steal the vehicle.
In a moment of sheer maternal instinct, Stakely courageously confronted the criminal, imploring them to halt their actions as her child was still inside.
Despite her warnings, the perpetrator callously continued driving away, prompting Stakely to leap onto the hood of the car in an attempt to thwart their escape.
Tragically, she fell from the vehicle and sustained critical injuries that ultimately led to her passing at Mount Carmel East Hospital.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two males fleeing from the stolen car and seeking refuge in another apartment complex.
Miraculously, Stakely’s son was found unharmed inside the abandoned vehicle, still peacefully asleep.
Law enforcement officials have reason to believe that these two individuals were part of a larger group observed loitering around residential buildings prior to the fateful incident. Sgt.
