Ahead of Saturday’s high-stakes matchup between the 21st-ranked Florida Gators and the top-five Ole Miss Rebels in Gainesville, the usual SEC trash talk has been notably absent. Instead, fans and coaches from both programs have engaged in what’s being called a “respect off,” complete with its own social media hashtag, #RespectOff.
The tone was set Monday when Florida head coach Jon Sumrall was told during a press conference that his team was favored by 3.5 points over Ole Miss. His response was brief and self-deprecating: “There’s a lot of good drugs out there.”
What might have been an ordinary display of coaching humility instead touched off a week of goodwill between the two fan bases online, a sharp departure from the tension that has defined other recent SEC matchups.
Just a week earlier, Ole Miss fans directed hostility toward LSU over the hiring of their former coach, and Florida and Auburn revived a rivalry with roots reaching back a century. By comparison, Florida and Ole Miss appear to have little built-up animosity heading into this game.
There is some history between the programs. Florida pursued Lane Kiffin last fall before he remained at Ole Miss, and the Rebels’ win over Florida in The Swamp in 2008 helped spark Tim Tebow’s famous postgame “promise” to Gators fans. Neither incident appears to be fueling any bitterness this week.
Both teams have significant stakes riding on Saturday’s outcome, with SEC Championship and College Football Playoff implications on the line for the loser. Whether the current spirit of goodwill survives the final score remains to be seen.
