A CRJ700 jet operated by PSA Airlines, under contract with American Airlines, collided with a military H-60 Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Tragically, this midair crash resulted in the loss of 67 lives. The collision occurred as the CRJ700 was on its final approach to runway 33, just across the Potomac River from the nation’s capital.
As a professional pilot, I shared my perspective on the incident, recognizing that the NTSB will conduct a detailed investigation. People questioned how the Black Hawk could have missed the bright landing lights of the CRJ700. However, the viral video of the crash didn’t capture the view from the helicopter’s perspective.
The Black Hawk approached from the side, where city lights can obscure visibility. Helicopters often climb in a nose-low position, which may have obstructed a direct line of sight to the CRJ. It’s puzzling why the military crew reported having the traffic in sight, suggesting they may have misidentified another aircraft, thus compromising their situational awareness.
The Black Hawk crew was operating under visual flight rules, emphasizing their responsibility to avoid other aircraft. It seems plausible that they called the wrong traffic in sight and inadvertently climbed into the path of the regional jet. This appears to be a tragic case of pilot error.
The regional jet was on its designated path and altitude. Speculation suggests that the Black Hawk, flying perpendicular to the approach path, might have been at an incorrect altitude and in a nose-low position without spotting the other aircraft. Recent videos bolster the theory of an accidental collision, dismissing claims of intentionality.
CNN obtained two videos presenting new angles of the midair collision. Both aircraft are seen flying towards each other before colliding and plummeting into the river. This footage offers significant insights into the sequence of events.
Contrary to some claims, the video does not indicate that the Black Hawk intentionally crashed into the CRJ. The helicopter’s nose-low attitude, visible from the rotor beacon position, restricted upward visibility. The use of night-vision goggles, as reported by the Department of Defense, would have further limited their view.
The CRJ’s landing lights, though bright, were less visible from the side, especially in clear conditions with minimal atmospheric moisture. Urban light pollution further complicates visibility. Spotting another aircraft so close to the ground is inherently challenging.
The regional jet was descending on its final approach, while the Black Hawk appeared to be climbing. This indicates that they were at different altitudes until impact. Essentially, the CRJ descended into the helicopter’s flight path, with the Black Hawk crew having limited upward visibility.
The CRJ was correctly positioned, whereas the Black Hawk deviated from its expected flight path. The helicopter’s crew, possibly distracted or confused, may have been looking in the wrong direction when warned by air traffic control. President Trump himself raised questions about the Black Hawk’s altitude discrepancy.
Several factors could explain this altitude issue: a sudden altitude gain, distraction, or incorrect altimeter settings. Each scenario remains plausible without suggesting intentional wrongdoing. The idea of the crew deliberately ramming the jet lacks credibility.

With three crew members aboard and no signs of a struggle, the notion of a coordinated intentional act is far-fetched. The helicopter maintained its flight path throughout the videos. Calculating such a collision without maneuvering is implausible.
This tragic incident seems to be a freak accident rather than a deliberate act. It’s essential to refrain from jumping to conclusions without evidence. The Black Hawk crew, while potentially at fault, were service members deserving of respect and understanding.
A circulating video showing “three near-misses” suggests prior attempts to ram other aircraft. However, those sharing the video lack substantial understanding of aviation dynamics. The incident remains under investigation, with the focus on uncovering factual insights.

Blackhawk at fault 50%, flying to high, should have been lower skimming the water, not site seeing.
Air Traffic controller 20%, at fault, poor coordinaion.
Reagan management at fault 30%, with only one Air Traffic controller on duty.
TaaRump and media must STFU and let the NTSB do their job!
You express your opinion but don’t want others to do it? Black Hawk at 100% fault for flying too high.
See latest comment update and yes the military knows better, much better!
“Mountain States Legal Foundation sued on behalf of plaintiff Andrew Brigida and over 2,000 other air traffic controller applicants who had test scores invalidated due to former President Barack Obama’s 2015 FAA diversity policy intended to hire more minorities. The lawsuit became class-action certified in 2022.
The would-be air traffic controller, who graduated from Arizona State University’s collegiate training initiative in 2013, was turned down for a job even though he had scored 100% on his training exam, the lawsuit alleges.”

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are essential values for any organization, especially in the field of aerospace engineering. Air traffic managers (ATMs) are responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient operation of the air traffic system, which involves coordinating with pilots, controllers, airlines, and other stakeholders.”
TaaRump was right….D.E.I. has consequences.
NTSB and Trump seem to be suggesting that in the latest News but action speaks much louder than words as far as I’m concerned! Also it just was stated in the mass media as I had said that these military aircraft should not have even been in that airspace let alone a final approach glide-slope of a commercial airliner over the river unless there was an emergency, which there wasn’t, and if there had been flight operations would be altered accordingly also not just VFR but IFR (collision avoidance transponders) should be in operation at all times in those locations during flight transition to landing safely! I would like to see all of the details on who was on duty and their entire backgrounds from ATC personnel and management of the facilities!
No Helicopter or any aircraft for that matter should have been flying in the flight path of the commercial airliner which was on a designated final leg of its landing at low altitude! What the hell was a military aircraft doing in that path when it’s a helicopter and could be out of the flight glide slope of the jet with a very simple maneuver being extremely versatile; never-mind all this horseshit about nose down attitude and difficulty seeing! They knew the jetliner was making “its final approach” so should have been “the hell out of the area” until it landed! What was the emergency for the military to have such a craft in the area! This is all BULLSHIT!
Don’t believe any of the suggested inferences of what maybe or maybe not happened! Following simple flight safety rules especially around an extremely busy airport like that is all academic and mandatory!
News Flash: “An American Airlines flight from Connecticut to Reagan National Airport had to abort its landing after a helicopter crossed its path. The flight, identified as American Airlines 4514, was forced to circle the airport before safely landing. This incident occurred just one day prior to a collision between an American Airlines plane and a Blackhawk helicopter at the same airport.
Reports from FlightAware indicated that the aircraft looped around and landed 13 minutes earlier than scheduled. The unexpected maneuver became necessary due to the close proximity of a helicopter. This near-miss highlighted concerns about air traffic safety at Reagan National Airport.” ://libertyonenews.com/flight-aborts-landing-at-dca-due-to-helicopter-crossing-path-day-before-chopper-plane-collision/
What did I say about any other aircraft let alone a military helicopter not supposed to fly anywhere near the commercial airliners final approach glide slope! All avoidable and obviously some people are not following SOP FAA Flight Rules and Regulations!
“Their grief underscored the human cost of lapses in safety protocols.”
All DEI hires must be terminated immediately! Along with NTSB review of everything especially the Military flight procedures around this airport!
Jeffries just another big mouth asshole that learned nothing three quarters of Americans voted for Trumps agendas not your dumbass policies so shut the f-ck up. You and democrats screwed up America and the American people in 4 years the worst administration ever in history to destroy it own country.
All this corruption is going to end with Trump as a truly American leadership administration. MAGA
So go pound sand big mouth because the American people stand with Trump.
