A bear got into the Mammoth Lakes Library in Mono County, California, early Wednesday morning, roaming the building before staff or patrons arrived for the day.
Surveillance footage shows the animal moving through the library’s upper floor, where a carpeted walkway runs past the shelves. Officials have not said how the bear got inside, and it had already left on its own before employees showed up for work.
The Mono County Office of Education posted about the incident on social media, joking that “we can only assume the new Li-BEAR-ian was looking for a copy of Winnie The Pooh.” The timing lined up with a milestone: Oct. 14 marked 100 years since Winnie The Pooh was first published, in 1926.
There is no confirmation the bear found any food during its time inside, and officials have not said what drew the animal into the building in the first place.
The Mammoth Lakes branch is one of seven locations in the Mono County Free Libraries system, which holds more than 180,000 physical titles along with digital materials. No damage or further incidents have been reported.
