In a striking turn of events, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has united with Latin American leaders to denounce alleged election fraud in Venezuela while sidestepping mounting evidence and concerns about the integrity of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela announced President Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the recent election, prompting opposition leaders to voice serious irregularities in the vote counting process.
Maria Corina Machado rejected Maduro’s victory and declared Edmundo Gonzalez as the new president, claiming that he had secured 70% of the votes with 40% counted, putting him 40 percentage points ahead of Maduro.
Edmundo Gonzalez, also contested the results announced by the CNE, stressing that electoral rules were violated and demanding a thorough examination of all ballots cast by voting machines to verify counting data.
Secretary Blinken, during a summit in Japan focusing on regional security and democracy, criticized Venezuela’s electoral practices and called for international support for free and fair elections.
He commended the Venezuelan people for their participation in the presidential election but expressed serious concerns about the announced result not reflecting their will or votes. Despite this backlash against Maduro’s victory announcement, Cuban dictator Miguel Díaz-Canel congratulated him on his “historic victory.”
Honduran President Xiomara Castro endorsed Maduro’s win, while Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed confidence in Maduro’s leadership contributing to progressive development in all areas.
