The ongoing FBI investigation into Democratic Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has recently expanded to the local police department, according to multiple local reports.
This development comes at a time when Thao is facing an upcoming recall election later this year.
While no charges have been filed at this time, federal agents raided Thao’s home last month and seized her phone and computer.
Additionally, the FBI took electronic devices belonging to Andre Jones, Thao’s partner, who has been involved in politics for several decades.
During a press conference, Thao refuted claims that the ongoing federal investigation was “not about” her.
The scope of the probe also included raids on three other properties linked to the politically influential Duong family, known for their ownership of California Waste Solutions, a prominent recycling company.
The nature of potential crimes being investigated by the FBI remains unclear. However, there is speculation that the probe may be related to a campaign contribution laundering scheme.
As part of their investigation, federal investigators have demanded phone directory records from the Oakland Police Department and requested documents showing all federal funding sources since 2021.
The subpoena specifically requested “all Oakland Police Department reports made by or involving any member of the Duong family” since April 2024.
Professor Greg Woods from San Jose State University emphasized the significance of these developments. He mentioned that these requests indicate a potentially massive corruption investigation being conducted by the grand jury at the instruction of the Department of Justice.
Woods further explained that while these requests do not necessarily imply that the police department is being investigated for wrongdoing, they could be aimed at uncovering instances where victims have filed complaints and piecing together a timeline for potential criminal activities.
Thao has consistently maintained her innocence throughout this ordeal. Neither the FBI nor the Oakland Police Department responded to requests for comment from news sources.
In addition to facing federal scrutiny and an ongoing investigation, Thao finds herself in a challenging position as residents express frustration with crime and homelessness crises in Oakland due to progressive policies imposed by local leaders.
This dissatisfaction has culminated in successful efforts by residents to secure enough signatures for a recall election for both Thao and Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price (D).
These developments have raised significant concerns within both local and political circles regarding potential implications on governance and leadership in Oakland.
The interplay between federal investigations and local politics presents complex challenges for both officials and residents as they navigate through this turbulent period.
