The Republican-controlled House of Representatives is gearing up to vote on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, H.R. 22. This legislation, spearheaded by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and supported by nearly 60 Republican lawmakers, aims to address the pressing issue of noncitizen voting in federal elections. The bill is a response to what many conservatives see as a threat to election integrity, exacerbated by Democratic policies favoring open borders and a weakened voting system.
The SAVE Act targets loopholes in the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, which currently allows noncitizens to find their way onto voter rolls. By requiring voter registration applicants to provide verified proof of U.S. citizenship, the bill seeks to strengthen safeguards that many believe are overdue. Legal documents like a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, U.S. passport, or certified birth certificate with a photo ID would be necessary to register.
To bolster the verification process, the bill allows for military IDs, naturalization certificates, and American Indian Cards with a “KIC” classification. For those who cannot immediately provide proof, states must develop alternative verification methods, like affidavits under penalty of perjury. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that only eligible citizens participate in the democratic process.
The legislation also mandates states to actively remove noncitizens from voter rolls, utilizing federal databases like the Department of Homeland Security’s SAVE system and Social Security Administration’s tools. Within 30 days of enactment, states would need to establish programs to identify and eliminate ineligible voters. This proactive measure is seen as a critical step in securing the integrity of elections.
Federal agencies under the SAVE Act would be required to share citizenship data with state election officials within 24 hours of a request, eliminating any associated fees. Any election official found registering noncitizens could face federal criminal charges, underscoring the bill’s strict enforcement measures. The Department of Homeland Security would also have the authority to investigate and potentially deport noncitizens found unlawfully registered.
In a united front, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), GOP Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN), and Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI) issued a statement urging congressional support for the SAVE Act. “American citizens — and only American citizens — should decide American elections,” they declared, emphasizing the bill’s role in safeguarding the democratic process. The legislation is seen as a continuation of efforts initiated by President Trump to secure voter registration and protect American voices.
Republican lawmakers have taken to social media to rally support for the bill, with Rep. Chip Roy tweeting, “HR 22, The SAVE Act, is on the floor this week. It requires proof of citizenship to register to vote. It also requires states to clean their voter rolls of non-citizens. This is critical legislation.” The message is clear: election integrity is a priority for the GOP.
Rep. Eli Crane also expressed support, stating, “This week, we will vote on @RepChipRoy’s SAVE Act, which would be a big win for election integrity. Only American citizens should vote in our elections. Is that so controversial?” The sentiment echoes across the party, with members emphasizing the importance of maintaining election integrity.
Rep. Richard Hudson highlighted the bill’s significance, tweeting, “It’s simple: if you are NOT an American citizen, you should NOT be voting in American elections. This week, the House will vote on the SAVE Act to kick illegal aliens off our voter rolls and ensure ONLY Americans are the ones deciding our elections.” This straightforward approach underscores the GOP’s commitment to protecting the electoral process.
The SAVE Act has become a rallying point for conservatives who believe that election integrity is non-negotiable. Rep. Greg Steube noted, “Democrats say they want to ‘protect democracy’; but they’re fighting a bill that stops non-citizens from voting. The SAVE Act: Requires proof of U.S. citizenship, Cleans up voter rolls, Secures our elections. House Republicans are putting America first.”
Rep. Scott Perry emphasized the necessity of the bill, tweeting, “Election Integrity Alert: Requiring proof of citizenship to register for federal elections is an obvious solution to voter fraud. I co-sponsored the SAVE Act to do that. It amends the National Voter Registration Act to require states to verify US citizenship.” The support for the bill is clear and widespread.
With the vote looming, Republicans remain steadfast in their belief that the SAVE Act is essential for preserving the sanctity of U.S. elections. Rep. Keith Self asserted, “This week, @HouseGOP is standing up for election integrity and voting on the SAVE Act. ONLY American citizens should be able to register to vote and cast a ballot in U.S. elections.” The push for the SAVE Act continues unabated among conservatives determined to fortify the electoral system.
