Julian Hall, an 18-year-old forward from New York City who plays for Red Bull New York, scored a header in the 51st minute of the United States men’s national team’s 4-2 win over Chile in St. Louis on Tuesday night, marking the second straight international match in which he found the net.
The goal made Hall the youngest player in USMNT history to score in back-to-back matches, and just the 13th player in program history to score in his first two senior appearances.
Hall made his first start for the national team on Tuesday, building on a strong debut performance Saturday in Orlando. His goal against Chile came at a key moment, tying the match after Chile had taken a one-goal lead.
The play began when Gio Reyna sent a ball into the box. Hall leaped to redirect it with a header past a diving Lawrence Vigouroux for the score.
“It’s been amazing to share the field with some amazing players and they put me in the right spots. I’m just doing as much as I can to put them away,” Hall said in an interview with TNT Sports.
Hall’s goal was not his only contribution to the win. He also set up the match’s opening goal, scored by Sebastian Berhalter, with a dummy move that created space for Berhalter to finish.
Hall entered the international window with momentum, having scored the lone goal in a Red Bulls win over rival New York City FC earlier this month. That goal snapped a lengthy scoring drought, but it capped a strong MLS season for the young forward, who has recorded 10 goals and five assists in league play this year under first-year head coach Michael Bradley, himself a former USMNT standout.
Hall credited Bradley’s coaching for his and teammate Adri Mehmeti’s development, both on the club level and now on the international stage.
“It’s been amazing. We had a lot of young guys on our team, including Adri who’s here as well, and he’s helped us so much in our development,” Hall said. “He’s a big reason as to why me and him are here right now. He’s been amazing, he gave us amazing advice before we came down here and he’s been awesome.”
