Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) said Thursday that passing legislation to block Democratic-run states from issuing commercial trucking licenses to illegal immigrants, tourists, and asylum seekers would be a top priority if Republicans hold Congress, pointing to a string of fatal crashes involving foreign drivers.
Moreno made the remarks during an appearance on Breitbart Fight Club, responding to a listener who asked about passage of the proposed “Red Light Act,” which would prohibit states from issuing commercial driver’s licenses to people in the country illegally, on tourist visas, or awaiting asylum decisions.
“If we keep the House and the Senate … [passing the Red Light Act] is going to be a top priority,” Moreno said.
Look, we shouldn’t have Americans dying because illegal aliens were given a driver’s license to drive a massive semi. I mean, by the way, I don’t think I should drive a semi … I don’t know how to do it. The idea that we take some random illegal, put them behind the wheel of a semi that killed American citizens in Ohio. I think it’s a half a dozen in Indiana. John, I’m sorry, Jim Banks was telling the story on the Senate floor the other day of the people who died. It should be zero, and the question is, how are they getting these licenses?
Moreno referenced remarks by Sen. Jim Banks (R-IN) describing deaths in Indiana linked to crashes involving drivers who should not have held commercial licenses, and said Ohio has seen fatalities tied to the same issue.
He also criticized Connecticut’s governor for arguing that undocumented immigrants should be able to obtain driver’s licenses in order to find work.
