Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) has pledged to hold federal health agencies accountable for alleged failures to disclose critical data about COVID-19 vaccine adverse effects. Johnson, who will soon lead the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, is preparing to subpoena the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) unless they fully cooperate with oversight requests.
In a letter issued Tuesday, Johnson demanded these agencies preserve and produce all documents related to the development, safety, and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines. The senator accused the Biden administration of obstructing Congressional oversight through redacted disclosures that he claims hinder public understanding and erode trust.
Senator Johnson has long been an outspoken critic of how federal health agencies managed COVID-19 vaccine transparency. His latest efforts focus on securing unredacted documents that may reveal what these agencies knew about potential adverse effects, such as myocarditis—a rare but serious heart condition observed in some vaccinated individuals.
A particularly concerning example cited by Johnson involves a 2021 draft Health Alert Network (HAN) message, which the CDC never released. According to Johnson, the draft contained early warnings about myocarditis risks but was shelved without explanation.
“Americans deserve full transparency from the agencies entrusted with their health and safety,” Johnson stated. “The continued stonewalling by HHS, CDC, and FDA raises serious concerns about what they are hiding.”
Johnson has indicated that subpoenas will be his next step if the agencies do not comply voluntarily. As chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, he will have the authority to compel testimony and document production.
The senator’s demands are part of a broader effort to investigate federal pandemic policies, including vaccine mandates and emergency authorization processes. Johnson has repeatedly criticized what he calls a lack of accountability from health officials during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to the CDC’s withheld HAN message, Johnson highlighted heavily redacted Pfizer reports and internal communications from federal agencies. He claims these documents concealed crucial safety data, potentially influencing public perception of the vaccines’ risks and benefits.
Johnson argues that withholding vaccine safety information undermines public trust in government institutions. He contends that the Biden administration’s reluctance to provide full transparency contradicts its promise of “following the science.”
“Transparency is not optional when it comes to public health,” Johnson said. “The American people have the right to know what their government knew about these vaccines and when they knew it.”
Critics of Johnson’s approach argue that his rhetoric risks fueling vaccine hesitancy. However, his supporters maintain that his efforts are necessary to ensure accountability and restore confidence in federal health agencies.
As Johnson prepares to take on this key Senate role, his battle for vaccine transparency is expected to intensify. Subpoenas could set the stage for high-profile hearings, bringing renewed scrutiny to the government’s handling of COVID-19 vaccines.
Whether his push will yield the transparency he seeks—or deepen partisan divides—remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the spotlight on vaccine safety and government accountability is far from fading.
