Vice President JD Vance said Saturday there is a possibility he will not run for president in 2028, even though he currently leads early polling for the Republican nomination.
Speaking at a CBS News town hall event in Flat Rock, Michigan, Vance was asked directly whether he might sit out the 2028 race. “Of course there’s a chance,” he said.
Vance pointed to his family as a factor in any future decision. “We’ve got four little kids, my wife has never loved politics. She loves public service,” he said.
The comments come despite Vance’s commanding position in early Republican primary surveys. According to the RealClearPolling average, Vance leads the potential 2028 GOP field with 39% support, 15 percentage points ahead of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, ranks third with 11%.
No other details about the vice president’s thinking, timeline, or family discussions were disclosed at the town hall.
The 2028 presidential race remains more than two years away, and control of Congress following the 2026 midterms could shape the political landscape before any formal campaign decisions are made.
