The New York Yankees placed second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a sprained right thumb, a significant loss as the team heads into the final stretch of the regular season with 18 games remaining.
Manager Aaron Boone said Chisholm will be shut down from baseball activities for seven to 10 days before the team reassesses his status.
“We just got an update that he does have a sprained right thumb that’s going to require an IL stint,” Boone said before New York faced the Colorado Rockies. “So no baseball activities for the next seven to 10 days and then see where we’re at.”
Chisholm was hurt sliding into second base while trying to stretch a single in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s 5-3 Yankees win. He was tagged out by Colorado shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, and his thumb appeared to strike Tovar’s cleat during the play. Chisholm remained in the game when New York took the field for the ninth inning but was removed after making an errant throw on a ground ball.
The injury comes as Chisholm, a free agent after this season, was putting together one of his strongest stretches of the year. He is hitting .232 with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs in 134 games this season, along with 40 stolen bases in 49 attempts — making him the first Yankee to reach 40 steals since Brett Gardner had 49 in 2011.
Over his last 15 games, Chisholm had been hitting .391 (18 for 46) with two homers and six RBIs, including two hits in Tuesday’s win.
“I feel like he has been really putting together some of his best at-bats of the season for an extended stretch,” Boone said. “So definitely a blow, but hopefully one that the time down here hopefully gets this thing right and puts us in position to impact us moving forward.”
Chisholm becomes the fourth Yankee placed on the injured list since Aug. 23, joining pitchers Ryan Weathers (strained left forearm) and Fernando Cruz (right elbow), along with outfielder Trent Grisham (right hamstring strain). He is the 18th Yankee to land on the IL this season for the American League wild-card leaders, who activated Aaron Judge on Tuesday following an 84-game absence caused by a broken rib.
This marks the third straight season Chisholm has spent time on the injured list. He missed roughly a month last year with a strained right oblique, and nearly two weeks in 2024 with a sprained left elbow after a headfirst slide. The Yankees acquired Chisholm from the Miami Marlins in July 2024.
Infielder Jose Caballero started at second base in Chisholm’s place Wednesday.
Volpe Waiting in the Wings
Anthony Volpe, who was sent down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Aug. 4, has been playing well in the minors and could be an option to fill the void. Volpe has appeared in 19 games at second base for the affiliate and recently earned International League Player of the Week honors after hitting .524 with three home runs and six RBIs over a six-game span. He was scratched from Wednesday’s Triple-A lineup.
Since his demotion, Volpe is batting .295 with 10 homers and 21 RBIs in 27 games while seeing time at shortstop and third base. Before being sent down, he had struggled at the major league level, hitting .240 with one homer and 19 RBIs in 56 games, prompting the Yankees to replace him at shortstop with rookie George Lombard Jr.
“I feel like he’s in a really good spot,” Boone said of Volpe. “He’s been really productive down there and playing really well. He has taken well to the other positions. So we’ll see.”
