President-elect Donald Trump has reaffirmed his commitment to nominating former Florida Representative Matt Gaetz as attorney general, brushing off concerns about lingering controversies tied to Gaetz’s past. Trump’s response came during a visit to Boca Chica, Texas, where he attended the sixth test flight of SpaceX’s Starship rocket.
When asked by reporters, “Mr. President, are you reconsidering the nomination of Matt Gaetz?” Trump responded succinctly, “No,” before moving on, according to Fox News.
Gaetz’s nomination has drawn significant criticism, largely tied to the fallout from a yearslong Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use. The DOJ ultimately dropped its case, citing credibility issues with the witnesses involved, but the controversy has cast a long shadow over his political career.
The House Ethics Committee, however, has continued to examine the claims. Its probe, which remains active, has further fueled opposition to Gaetz’s nomination.
Just hours after his nomination was announced, Gaetz resigned from Congress to prepare for his new role. House Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest (R-Miss.) clarified how this move impacts their investigation:
“If Mr. Gaetz were to resign because he is taking a position with the administration as the attorney general, then the Ethics Committee loses jurisdiction at that point,” Guest explained. “Once we lose jurisdiction, there would not be a report that would be issued. That’s not unique to this case.”
The DOJ’s decision to close its investigation without charges has become a central point of contention. The Federalist editor Mollie Hemingway criticized the Ethics Committee for relying on the same witnesses the DOJ deemed unreliable.
“Many Americans are sick and tired of elected officials and media pundits doing nothing as the DOJ attempted to destroy the country with its abuse of the rule of law,” Hemingway wrote in a recent column.
She went on to accuse the Ethics Committee of coordinating with media outlets to undermine Gaetz’s nomination. “The same two central witnesses the DOJ dismissed are the foundation of the Ethics Committee’s report,” Hemingway argued. “This report is now being leaked to thwart his nomination.”
Much of the controversy surrounding Gaetz stems from allegations tied to his former associate, Joel Greenberg, a disgraced Seminole County tax collector currently serving an 11-year prison sentence.
Greenberg, described by Florida journalist Marc Caputo as “one of the most corrupt Florida politicians of all time,” admitted to a range of crimes, including fabricating allegations against political opponents.
In one instance, Greenberg falsely accused Brian Beute, a schoolteacher and political rival, of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student—an allegation eerily similar to those leveled against Gaetz.
Greenberg also attempted to frame his own attorney by planting child pornography on the attorney’s devices, a scheme so bizarre that a New York Times article referred to Greenberg as being akin to “the Tiger King elected tax collector.”
U.S. District Judge Gregory Presnell, who presided over Greenberg’s case, called his actions “downright evil.”
Despite these revelations, Greenberg’s accusations against Gaetz have been weaponized in political and media circles, Hemingway argued. “The individuals making accusations against Matt Gaetz had such significant credibility issues that they could not be charged with any crimes,” she noted.
Trump’s support for Gaetz has remained steadfast, even as critics from both parties have raised concerns. By standing by his nominee, Trump signals his broader opposition to what he describes as “weaponized investigations” and politically motivated smears.
“Matt Gaetz is a fighter, and that’s exactly what we need in the Justice Department,” a Trump campaign insider said.
Gaetz’s controversial nomination underscores the deep divisions within Washington. Supporters argue that his willingness to confront entrenched systems makes him uniquely qualified to lead the DOJ. Critics, however, see the appointment as a risky gamble that could further polarize an already divided government.
If confirmed, Gaetz would take on the monumental task of reshaping the Department of Justice in Trump’s image, fulfilling the president-elect’s promise to overhaul federal law enforcement. However, the ongoing controversies ensure that Gaetz’s journey to confirmation will be anything but smooth.
As the Ethics Committee probe looms and media scrutiny intensifies, the stakes surrounding Gaetz’s nomination grow higher. Whether his detractors can derail his appointment—or if Trump’s base will rally behind the embattled nominee—remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that Gaetz’s path forward will continue to dominate political headlines.
