A fiery exchange on a CNN panel erupted into chaos as Republican strategist Scott Jennings dismantled claims made by commentators about President-elect Donald Trump’s alleged plans to use the military against U.S. citizens. The heated discussion, which aired on CNN, showcased the sharp partisan divides over Trump’s policy proposals, particularly concerning immigration enforcement and the use of military resources.
The debate kicked off with left-wing content creator Leigh McGowan making a provocative statement: “Trump will use the military to make blue states behave.” The claim immediately drew a strong reaction from Jennings, who pressed her for clarification.
“What are you talking about?” Jennings asked, visibly puzzled. As McGowan doubled down on her assertion, Jennings sought to pin down the logic behind her argument. “Can I just make sure I understand your position?” he asked. “You believe Donald Trump is going to use the military to set up, effectively, like, coups in state capitals of states that he didn’t win?”
The debate took a turn when CNN anchor Abby Phillip attempted to mediate but inadvertently fueled the conversation further. “Trump has wanted to use the military to do things domestically that the military is not allowed to do,” Phillip said. She cited immigration enforcement as an example, suggesting Trump’s approach could overstep legal boundaries.
Jennings swiftly countered, arguing that under certain conditions, such as a national emergency declaration, the National Guard can legally assist in immigration enforcement. He also pointed out that Trump had previously floated the idea of invoking the Alien Enemies Act, a law dating back to 1798, as a measure to address what he described as a border crisis.
“The military can absolutely be used to work with local officials,” Jennings explained. “We already send the National Guard to the border to provide resources and support.”
The discussion took a more inflammatory turn when Philadelphia Daily News columnist Solomon Jones joined in, accusing Trump’s approach of risking violence against American citizens. “The military is not supposed to take up arms against American citizens,” Jones said.
Jennings rebutted, emphasizing that the conversation centered on illegal immigrants, not U.S. citizens. “This is about illegal immigration,” he said. “You all keep saying American citizens, but it’s about illegal immigrants.”
Jones escalated the rhetoric further, questioning how the military would distinguish between citizens and illegal immigrants. “How do we know if they’re illegal or not? We know after they’re shot?” he asked, a comment that drew gasps from the panel.
Jennings condemned the inflammatory suggestion, dismissing it as a baseless conspiracy. “We are in the fever swamps, Abby. I’m sorry,” Jennings said, addressing the anchor. “They’re saying that [Trump is] sending the military to shoot and/or round up American citizens. Not true.”
In an attempt to deflect, McGowan tried to walk back her earlier remarks. “We did not say shoot people, Scott,” she said, even though the statement had been made moments earlier by Jones.
Jennings remained steadfast, accusing his fellow panelists of exaggerating Trump’s policies to stoke fear. “You’re creating a scenario that doesn’t exist,” Jennings stated. “The military is not going to be rounding up American citizens or engaging in violence against them.”
Jennings also provided context on Trump’s previous immigration policies, noting that the deployment of the National Guard to assist with border security is not unprecedented. Past administrations, including those of Barack Obama and George W. Bush, have also used the military in supportive roles during immigration crises.
WATCH:
The Alien Enemies Act, while rarely invoked, gives the president broad authority to detain or deport individuals deemed a threat during times of war or national emergency. However, Jennings pointed out that the law does not allow for actions against U.S. citizens, contrary to the claims made by the other panelists.
The chaotic exchange underscores the heightened tensions surrounding Trump’s return to the political stage. While Trump’s critics express concerns about his aggressive rhetoric and potential overreach, supporters argue that his policies focus on enforcing existing laws and securing the border.
For Jennings, the panel’s discussion represented what he called a descent into “the fever swamps” of conspiracy. He criticized CNN’s framing of the topic, accusing the network of amplifying unfounded fears rather than engaging in a substantive debate about immigration policy.
The CNN panel’s debate on Trump and the military spiraled into a microcosm of the broader political discourse: divisive, sensationalized, and often detached from legal or practical realities. Jennings’ pushback highlighted the importance of grounding debates in facts rather than speculative fears.
As Trump’s immigration policies continue to generate controversy, discussions like these will likely remain a flashpoint for partisan divisions. The challenge, however, lies in separating genuine policy concerns from hyperbolic rhetoric that undermines productive dialogue.

A nagging thought keeps repeating itself. that the reason the Progressive reactionaries are speaking in totalitarian civil rights violations, is because that is exactly where they intended to go if Donald John Trump had not won the election. They are showing their mindset in their viewpoint.
These people on CNN need to read the Constitution. They don’t seem to understand the difference between ILLEGAL citizens and AMERICAN citizens. Could someone please educate them or get them off national TV???
Boycott all sponsors of CNN until they clean up their act
With our senile president giving away taxpayers money to any country that mails a check to Hunter it is imperative that someone hold the line and close the purse strings as the Biden crime family has already scored enough to keep them all in drugs for the rest of their lives! One point to remember about the House passing any funding bills for a war people do not support: Johnson may introduce the bill but with the conservatives holding the majority, no matter how slim, he was not the only one to support the funding.
Biden’s spending is just his way to try to screw TRUMP on his promise to cut spending and bring down inflation. With the trillions that the old fool wasted in the last 4 years, the problems the TRUMP team will have trying to keep his promise have more then doubled and the old fool isn’t gone yet so expect more damage!
This reminds me of the story where I believe a radio announcer was airing a fake invasion of New York City and people believed it was true and panic ensued. Well the media is still trying to scare the public with fake slanted stories mixed with stupidity.
I pat myself on the back everyday for not watching this stupid network, CNN.
CNN and all the other so-called main stream media oulets are an enemy of the people and the truth.
These “news” networks sow nothing but fear and division in America. And sadly to say there are some Americans who believe their drivel.
And course being the proganda arm of the DNC they do the dims bidding, which is to create division, chaos and hatred. The democrats with the aid of the MSM create all the problems and then call for more government to solve the very problems they created.
Do yourself a favor people Stop watching CNN and any of the other MSM outlets, you and America will be better off.
