Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ashley Hinson is calling for the war in Iran to be “brought to a successful and immediate end,” arguing that Iowans are paying the price at the pump and the checkout line while the conflict drags on.
The Iowa congresswoman made the case in a Monday post on X, connecting the war overseas directly to household costs back home.
“Iowans are being squeezed and shouldn’t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran. We need to use every option at our disposal to provide some relief from high prices,” Hinson wrote.
She laid out a specific list of steps she says should be taken now to ease the burden on families, farmers and truckers:
- Suspending the federal gas tax
- Pausing diesel exports
- Expanding availability of E-15 fuel
- Reinstating the $1-per-gallon biodiesel tax credit
- Creating a diesel relief program for farmers and truckers
“That includes suspending the gas tax, pausing diesel exports, unleashing E-15 everywhere we can, reinstating the $1/gallon biodiesel tax credit, and creating a diesel relief program to help our farmers and truckers being crushed by the high costs,” she continued.
Hinson also said any relief effort needs to protect infrastructure funding, warning that Iowans shouldn’t be left with deteriorating roads and bridges while they wait for prices to come down.
“While doing this, we should also ensure our highway trust fund is replenished, so that Iowans don’t suffer from crumbling roads and bridges while relief comes our way now. These actions to lower costs are needed ASAP, and the war needs to be brought to a successful and immediate end,” Hinson wrote.
Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment on Wednesday.
Hinson entered the Senate race last year, launching her bid the same day Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, announced she would not seek re-election. President Donald Trump endorsed Hinson for the seat within days of her announcement. She has represented Iowa in the U.S. House since early 2021.
Her opponent in the race is Iowa state Rep. Josh Turek, who has the backing of former President Barack Obama.
Hinson’s comments come as President Trump himself weighs how far to take the U.S. posture toward Iran. In a Tuesday address to the United Nations General Assembly, Trump said he faces “a big decision to make” over whether to pursue a deal that would let Iran “rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before,” or instead move to “annihilate the Islamic Republic” quickly, in his words, “never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again.”
