With early voting underway and Election Day just three days away, California Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton used Halloween to make a political point, dressing up as his Democratic opponent Xavier Becerra at a trunk-or-treat event in Highland Park, Los Angeles, on Saturday.
Hilton, wearing a mask of the former Biden-era Health and Human Services Secretary, used the costume to criticize Becerra’s record on cost-of-living issues in California, including high gas prices, vehicle registration fees, and a mileage tax Becerra said Wednesday he would consider imposing on drivers.
Trunk-or-Treat in Highland Park, LA! Becerra’s policies should FRIGHTEN you: $8 gas, sky-high vehicle registration fees… and now a $1,000 mileage tax! Just 3 days left to vote against this INSANITY. Tell everyone you know to do the same!
In a separate post, Hilton wrote: “Xavier Becerra wants to tax us for every mile we drive in California, but you can stop him and stop the insanity in Sacramento if you VOTE!”
Becerra’s comments on a potential mileage tax came days before the election, after roughly five million Californians had already cast ballots. The source material does not indicate Becerra had previously disclosed a position on the proposal.
Hilton’s campaign also circulated an additional video depicting Becerra as a future California governor, warning voters: “California, you already pay the highest taxes in the country. Don’t let this clown trick you into paying MORE! This Halloween, VOTE to stop Becerra’s Mileage Tax. Just Try It!”
A Tennessee Congressman’s Son Plays Dad for a Day
Elsewhere, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN-2) was the subject of a Halloween costume from his own son, who dressed as the congressman and shared two videos online.
In one clip, the son, imitating his father’s voice, says: “Hey, everybody, Tim Burchett. Just early voted. Please get out and vote.”
The second video recreates an earlier exchange in which Rep. Burchett responded to a reporter’s question about whether he still trusted the Trump administration’s national security team following a Signal chat leak. Burchett had replied: “Do you trust your mother every night to fix your Hot Pockets and make sure your Game Boy is turned on?”
Both the Hilton and Burchett posts come as campaigns on both sides make final pushes ahead of the midterm elections, with early voting already underway in multiple states.
