U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is set to meet with House Republicans on Wednesday as President Trump’s escalating trade war with Canada becomes a growing political flashpoint, according to a source familiar with the planning.
Greer is scheduled to attend the Republican Study Committee’s weekly lunch, and two sources told Fox News Digital they expect lawmakers to bring up the ongoing tariff dispute with Canada during the session. It is not clear when the meeting was first arranged, nor whether Republicans plan to press Greer with tough questions or voice outright opposition to the administration’s approach.
The gathering comes amid rising tension between Washington and Ottawa. On Sunday, Trump accused Ontario of exploiting American businesses in a post on Truth Social, writing that Canada wants “to be treated like a state, but they aren’t one.”
“They’ve been ripping us off for decades, and it’s going to stop,” Trump wrote.
The dispute has already produced significant economic consequences. The United States imposed a 50% tariff on a range of Canadian goods in late July, with those duties taking effect earlier this month. Canada responded in kind, placing tariffs of up to 50% on U.S. imports.
Trump further inflamed tensions this month by signing an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
A Recurring Fight on Capitol Hill
Trump’s tariff policy has repeatedly divided lawmakers during his second term. In February, the House passed a bill aimed at reversing his earlier tariffs on Canada, with six Republicans crossing party lines to support it. Only one Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, voted against the measure.
Wednesday’s meeting with Greer will offer the clearest signal yet of how much appetite remains within the House GOP for continuing to back the administration’s hardline trade stance against one of the nation’s closest allies.
