On a recent episode of The View, co-host Sunny Hostin set off a firestorm with polarizing comments equating the January 6 Capitol riot to historical tragedies such as the Holocaust, slavery, and World War II. Her statements, made on the anniversary of the 2021 events, drew sharp criticism across political and social media spheres, reigniting debates about the boundaries of political discourse.
Hostin began her remarks by framing January 6, 2021, as a dark chapter in American history, calling it “one of the worst moments in American history.” While the characterization itself was divisive, it was her comparison of the Capitol breach to atrocities like the Holocaust and slavery that fueled widespread backlash.
“You don’t move on from January 6th because January 6th was an atrocity,” Hostin said during the segment. “It was one of the worst moments in American history. And when you think of the worst moments in American history, you know, like World War II, things that happened, you know, like the Holocaust, chattel slavery. We need to never forget because past becomes prologue if you forget and erase.”
The live studio audience applauded Hostin’s comments, but reactions outside the studio were far less favorable. Critics accused her of trivializing horrific historical events to make a political point, and the backlash came quickly.
CNN political commentator Scott Jennings responded to Hostin’s remarks during a separate broadcast, offering a firm yet measured critique. Jennings highlighted the danger of overblown rhetoric, cautioning against elevating the Capitol riot to the same level as genocides and systemic enslavement.
“In light of all the rhetoric and things we’re going to hear people say today,” Jennings stated, “some have already made extraordinarily unhinged and vile comparisons—equating January 6th to the Holocaust, to slavery, to World War II.”
Jennings urged viewers to consider the event within the broader context of history. “It was not a good day. Political violence cannot be condoned, but we can also be measured in how we view it in light of the rest of American and world history,” he said.
He added that the United States was making progress toward unity, observing, “What’s happening today is ultimately a good thing because both parties, for the first time in my adult life, are accepting the results of an election, and that is ultimately putting this country on the right track.”
Hostin’s remarks ignited a firestorm on social media. Conservative commentators and public figures lambasted her for what they saw as a blatant trivialization of global atrocities.
“Sunny Hostin comparing J6 to the Holocaust is an insult to every victim of that genocide,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Others questioned her inclusion of World War II as an “atrocity,” given that it was a conflict that ended the Holocaust and defeated fascist regimes.
Prominent figures within Jewish and conservative circles called for an apology from Hostin or The View. Critics noted that such rhetoric risks undermining public understanding of historical tragedies.
Even the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which has previously condemned trivial Holocaust comparisons, has been conspicuously silent on the matter, leaving many wondering whether they will issue a formal response.
The Capitol riot has remained a deeply divisive issue in American politics. Democrats frequently cite the event as a dire threat to democracy, while many Republicans argue it has been weaponized for political gain.
Jennings echoed a sentiment shared by many conservatives, suggesting that the rhetoric surrounding January 6 has been inflated for partisan purposes. “It was a moment of unrest that was embarrassing and ill-advised, but ‘democracy’ was not in peril,” he said.
Hostin’s comments have added fuel to the debate, particularly regarding the ethics of political comparisons. Was her analogy an attempt to emphasize the seriousness of January 6, or did it cross the line into hyperbole?
The controversy surrounding Hostin’s statements raises broader questions about responsible public discourse. Critics argue that equating January 6 with events like the Holocaust or slavery diminishes the gravity of those historical atrocities while undermining efforts to foster meaningful dialogue about contemporary challenges.
Jennings’ measured response has been praised by many as an example of how to engage with divisive topics without resorting to inflammatory rhetoric. “We have to find a way to discuss events like January 6 without losing perspective,” he said.

Ho’stin also said that earthquakes, the eclipse and cicadas were caused by GLOBAL WARMING.
That’s the level of intelligence heard on The View.
How do they get the audience to applaud the Morons on the View. Are they all New York Morons also?
Only threat to democracy is the president biden and his henchmen
Threat to “DEMOCRAT-cy”. A large dump of hyperbole, from an obviously ignorant woman.
So sad.
What is really sad is that so many refer to America as a Democracy when it is actually a Constitutional Republic and that is what the women of the View and Democrats cannot get that straight while they make these absurd statements and comparisons. It is definitely questionable as to what the intelligence level of these people is.
This woman is a blithering idiot on a show that is of, by and for idiots!
Why would anyone that has a brain or a clue even waste a minute of their time watching or listening to such vipers!
WASTE OF TIME; get-it. I REST MY CASE.
How low does one’s IQ have to be to watch the View?
Single digit territory; look at Whoopi that’s the state or condition of anyone who watches them!
I was there that day (didn’t go in the building) and it is not what they say it was. I am so glad the tyranny is almost over. Now maybe we won’t be afraid to share our videos and photos we took during the event that day and the whole world can understand that it was a protest with infiltrators who set all of us up. I hope those who did not hurt anyone or anything that day, yet were persecuted by our government for using their first amendment rights to protest and assemble, get justice.
CatChristo; God bless you and yours and I pray for you and everyone that was there to protect peacefully just like President Trump said at the time!!! This is so horrible and evil what the other side did to our Nation and so many innocent good Citizens like you! I love Y’all!
Let’s keep praying and moving forward for God and His will so this we pray will be a sad horrible time in the past with a brighter and just future for everyone!
Thank you!
God bless you and yours!
