Tesla, Elon Musk’s iconic electric car company, has come under fire for replacing laid-off American employees with foreign workers on H-1B visas, a move that has stirred controversy and reignited the national debate over immigration and employment policies. Reports from former Tesla employees and U.S. Department of Labor data reveal that the company laid off approximately 15,000 workers in April 2024, only to ramp up its hiring of H-1B visa holders to fill many of those roles.
Tesla’s sweeping layoffs this year impacted every department but were particularly concentrated in its Texas and California operations, which house the bulk of its workforce. While the company cited cost-cutting and efficiency measures as reasons for the layoffs, many of the affected employees were senior engineers earning higher salaries. These positions have reportedly been filled by less experienced foreign engineers working under H-1B visas, a move critics claim was driven by a desire to cut labor costs.
H-1B visas are designed to allow U.S. companies to employ foreign workers in “specialty occupations” when qualified American candidates are unavailable. The visas are valid for three years and can be renewed for an additional three. However, the visa system has faced criticism for creating a dependency that ties workers to their sponsoring employers, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation.
During the same period as the layoffs, Tesla filed requests for over 2,000 H-1B visas—accounting for more than three percent of all H-1B visas issued nationwide. This sharp increase in Tesla’s reliance on foreign labor has fueled accusations that the company is exploiting the program to displace higher-paid U.S. workers with cheaper labor from abroad.
Elon Musk has been a vocal advocate for expanding the H-1B visa program. Recently, he clashed with conservative critics on his social media platform, X, accusing them of undermining America’s ability to attract top global talent. Responding to a user’s comment suggesting reform of the H-1B system, Musk launched into a profanity-laden tirade:
“The reason I’m in America along with so many critical people who built SpaceX, Tesla, and hundreds of other companies that made America strong is because of H-1B,” Musk wrote. “Take a big step back and [expletive] yourself in the face. I will go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend.”
This outburst, peppered with a reference to the 2008 comedy film Tropic Thunder, reflects Musk’s passion for defending the program, which he credits with enabling his own success in the U.S. and that of other tech innovators.
Proponents of the H-1B program, including Musk and GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, argue that the visas are essential for filling gaps in the U.S. labor market, particularly in fields like engineering and technology. They contend that many specialized roles in these industries cannot be filled solely by domestic talent, and restricting access to global workers could stifle innovation.
However, critics counter that companies often misuse the program as a cost-saving measure, replacing qualified American workers with cheaper foreign labor. This practice, they argue, undermines the very purpose of the program and harms American families.
Victor Davis, a former Tesla engineer affected by the layoffs, expressed frustration over Musk’s stance. “It’s not that there aren’t qualified Americans; it’s that companies like Tesla prioritize their bottom line over investing in experienced domestic talent,” he said.
Tesla’s actions are part of a larger trend of increased H-1B visa reliance among U.S. companies, particularly in the tech sector. In fiscal year 2024, the U.S. issued nearly 65,000 H-1B visas, with many going to large corporations looking to fill technical positions. Yet the program has faced repeated calls for reform from both political parties.
The controversy over Tesla’s layoffs and subsequent hiring of H-1B workers highlights the challenges of balancing corporate needs with national interests. Critics argue that the current system allows employers to exploit the visa program, displacing domestic workers while placing foreign employees in precarious situations.
As debates over immigration and labor policies continue to dominate political discourse, Tesla’s actions may serve as a flashpoint for broader changes to the H-1B program. Policymakers face the difficult task of reforming the system to ensure it meets its intended purpose: addressing genuine labor shortages without undercutting American workers or exploiting foreign talent.
Meanwhile, Tesla’s reputation as an innovative leader is being tested by these labor practices, as critics and former employees call for greater accountability. For now, Musk remains unapologetic, doubling down on his belief that access to global talent is key to America’s success.
Whether his stance will ultimately resonate with the public—or further alienate a segment of his supporters—remains to be seen.

Corporate “Traitor” Musk!
A very greedy and tricky devil ay!
I’ve said for a few years how I could see something way off with this guy that so many were tripping all over themselves to gain his notice!
I would actually prefer seeing him move back to South Africa and tear up his former Old H-1B VISA!
I just noted yesterday on this topic the following.
Musk is looking at the situation from a “business perspective” (he figures he is the expert on all matters) which of course he would because he made $Billions here in America that gave him that ability which he couldn’t do so well elsewhere or he would have stayed in South Africa or moved to Russia and China! What he is “trampling upon” is “Republican Loyalty to American Patriotism and Heritage” which revolves around “Christian Values, Family and Country!” Those are things Musk is “wishy-washy” about and I have said for some time now, “that I don’t trust him or like his outlook on some very pertinent and critical issues that are American First!” I really have grown to “not like the guy at all” and all I see is “a big mouth egotistical bigot” and “a very dangerous man to America” overall. Too many Citizens are “duped and fooled by him” but “he has proven me right for rejecting him flat-out” as too many “powers that be” would have me not do, but I will not go by “their mandates,” as we all saw plainly what they did with the Plan-demic! This following statement of his (Musk) proves me absolutely right!
“Take a big step back and FUCK YOURSELF in the face. I will go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend.”
He is one “truly deranged,” “lost in his own mind” and in his own language “one sick MF’er” if I ever saw one; and to boot this guy is pushing “Occupy Mar’s” which is total madness, evil and a dead giveaway of who or what he serves!
“God wants us to do right with the planet Earth” that “He created us to live on!”
This Musk follows Satan not God!
Isaiah 14:12-17 NKJ Version ‘The Fall of Lucifer’ 12 “How you are fallen from heaven, O [a]Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations!13 For you have said in your heart:‘ I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north;14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the [b]lowest depths of the Pit. 16 “Those who see you will gaze at you, And consider you, saying: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms,17 Who made the world as a wilderness And destroyed its cities, Who [c]did not open the house of his prisoners?’
This arrogant maniac thinks he is in control of the GOP and America if he can have his way! Who elected this nut to anything?
Musk’s scorched earth attack upon prominent activist Laura Loomer after her statements on Twitterx where he totally disrespected her and even shutdown her account along with his dissing many nationalists who argue that foreign workers, particularly those on H-1B visas, threaten American jobs.
To Laura he stated!
@elonmusk
The “contemptible fools” I’m referring to are those in the Republican Party who are hateful, unrepentant racists.
They will absolutely be the downfall of the Republican Party if they are not removed.
“The reason I’m in America along with so many critical people who built SpaceX, Tesla and hundreds of other companies that made America strong is because of H1B.”
He added, “Take a big step back and FUCK YOURSELF in the face. I will go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend.”
No moron you’re the ilk that should be removed as you are a leader of the RINO’s! Playing the old “wolf in sheep’s clothing” game, clown face!
He doesn’t care about America or American Workers because he truly only cares about “himself and his oodles of American Green Backs he rakes in,” the greedy SOB!
Evil to the core which comes through loud and clear.
And there you have it. No wonder Musk is so anyl about foreign workers. He should be forced out of the U.S. and his businesses closed and his products banned. Electric cars are shit anyway and there’s no reason to go into space all the time. THERE’S NOTHING THERE!
Musk is a bigot.
…..and for a supposedly intelligent man- he’s quite stupid. He has 12 kids by 3 different women.
Instead of replacing laid-off American employees with foreign workers, he should move his business to India or China.
I don’t trust Elon Musk any more than I would trust George Soros. Anyone using Progressive for their insurance needs should be aware that they are paying money into the pockets of a man who at age 14, went around Germany with his uncle stripping rich Jews of their wealth for the Nazis. He’s an unindicted war criminal–and Musk is 142X richer than George Soros.
All strong points being illuminated as to a dark side!
TaaRump, MuskY, RamaswamPy betrayed the MAGA base that voted them in only to conspire to replace them with cheaper H-1B scabs that can not vote.
All true!
