The Trump administration is stepping up its commitment to protect American values, free speech, and taxpayer integrity by launching a federal investigation into the Wikimedia Foundation, the parent organization behind Wikipedia, which many argue has strayed far from its original mission of neutrality. Edward Martin Jr., appointed by President Trump as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, is now leading a formal inquiry into whether the Wikimedia Foundation is violating federal law by acting as a political actor instead of a neutral, educational nonprofit. In a letter dated April 24, Martin laid out concerns that Wikipedia may be engaged in partisan behavior, foreign influence operations, and ideological indoctrination, which could place its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in serious jeopardy.
According to U.S. tax law under Section 501(c)(3) of Title 26, organizations receiving tax-exempt status are required to operate strictly for religious, educational, scientific, or charitable purposes. They are prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in political campaigns or attempting to influence legislation. Martin’s letter suggests Wikipedia may be violating these principles repeatedly and egregiously, particularly by allowing leftist and foreign-aligned editors to manipulate politically sensitive content to favor Democrats and progressive causes.
Martin also raised alarms about the Wikimedia Foundation’s board being composed largely of foreign nationals, raising serious questions about national security, influence operations, and the misuse of a U.S.-based nonprofit platform to promote anti-American narratives. He suggested that Wikipedia’s current leadership may be acting in the interest of globalist or foreign priorities, rather than safeguarding American values or serving the U.S. public.
Evidence of bias is overwhelming. According to multiple investigative reports, including a detailed analysis by Blaze News, Wikipedia editors have deliberately edited or omitted key facts to shape public opinion. These include minimizing Vice President JD Vance’s military service, scrubbing Kamala Harris’s failed record as border czar, and portraying historical atrocities by communist regimes as exaggerated by “anti-communist bias.”
Conservative figures like Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Ron DeSantis have been consistently smeared, while far-left activists and foreign interests receive favorable treatment. Even respected conservative outlets like the New York Post, Blaze Media, and The Washington Free Beacon have been blacklisted as “unreliable sources” by Wikipedia’s editing elite, despite their proven track record of accurate reporting.
Martin’s investigation also takes aim at Wikipedia’s role in promoting far-left cultural narratives, including critical race theory, radical gender ideology, and censorship of COVID-19 dissent. For example, during the pandemic, Wikipedia actively dismissed the lab-leak theory—now widely acknowledged as credible—as a “conspiracy theory,” parroting the Chinese Communist Party’s narrative while censoring American scientists and researchers who questioned the official line.
In addition to leftist political propaganda, Martin noted that Wikipedia has also been accused of spreading antisemitic and anti-Israel content, echoing concerns raised by Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League. Greenblatt called out Wikipedia’s refusal to address coordinated editor misconduct that introduced hostile narratives about Israel and Jewish history, while branding the ADL itself as “unreliable.”
Martin, who is also a member of the Justice Department’s Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism, stated bluntly that “disguising political propaganda as educational material is a direct violation of federal law and public trust.”
Martin emphasized that American taxpayers deserve better. He wrote that the public should be able to “rely on a reasonable expectation of neutrality, transparency, and accountability”—something Wikipedia, under current leadership, has failed to deliver. He also warned of the broader implications of Wikipedia’s bias, noting that search engines like Google and AI platforms often rely on Wikipedia as a data source, thereby amplifying misinformation and leftist indoctrination on a global scale.
To that end, the Department of Justice has officially requested documentation from the Wikimedia Foundation by May 15, including internal policies on editorial accountability, anti-propaganda measures, and the steps it is taking to ensure ideological balance and transparency. This marks a significant escalation in the Trump administration’s efforts to clean up America’s information infrastructure and hold nonprofits accountable for weaponizing education to push political agendas.
